The Chevrolet Grand Prix is an exciting annual car race. It happens every July in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. The race takes place at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. It's part of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. This championship is run by the IMSA.
The first race was held in 1975. Today, the race lasts two hours and forty minutes. This time limit helps make it good for television. In the past, this Grand Prix was part of other big racing series. These included the World Sportscar Championship and the American Le Mans Series. It was also part of the IMSA GT Championship.

Discovering the Race's Past
The Canadian Tire Motorsport Park has a long racing history. The first big international sports car races happened there in 1961. These included the Players 200 and the first Canadian Grand Prix. Famous drivers like Stirling Moss and Peter Ryan won these early races.
In 1966, the track hosted a race for the new Can-Am Series. A year later, in 1967, it even hosted a Formula One Grand Prix. The Mosport track held more Can-Am races than any other place. These races continued until the series ended in 1986.
IMSA Races Begin at Mosport

In 1975, the IMSA brought its sports cars to the track. Their Camel GT Challenge was part of the Labatt's Blue 5000 Weekend. The first IMSA race was 100 miles long. Hurley Haywood won it in a Porsche Carrera.
The race was part of the World Sports Car Championship six times. The first time was in 1976. The last time was in 1985. This was the last time a major FIA World Championship event was held at the track.
IMSA returned to Mosport from 1989 to 1992. They held races just for their GTO and GTU car classes. In 1995, new "World Sports Cars" brought prototype cars back to the track. This was the first time in ten years.
The American Le Mans Series Era
In 1999, the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) came to Mosport. This was a new series for IMSA. It brought back special prototype cars. These cars were built for the super-fast speeds of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
Cars from brands like Audi, BMW, and Porsche raced here. They set the fastest speeds ever recorded at the track. In the 2008 Grand Prix of Mosport, Rinaldo Capello set the fastest lap. He did it in an Audi R10 TDI. His time was an amazing 1 minute, 4.094 seconds.
Mosport was one of only four tracks that hosted an ALMS race every year. It was on their schedule for fifteen years.
Modern Racing and Recent Times
In 2014, the Grand Prix became part of the new IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. This happened after the ALMS joined with another series called Grand-Am.
Sadly, in 2020 and 2021, the Grand Prix did not happen. This was the first time in 25 years. The races were canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
