Where Water Flows from Mount Garfield

Water from Mount Garfield travels in different directions. This is called a drainage system.

South Side Water Flow

Water that falls on the south side of Mount Garfield flows into the Franconia Branch. This branch is part of the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River. This river then flows through the Pemigewasset Wilderness. Eventually, this water joins the Pemigewasset and Merrimack rivers. Finally, it reaches the Gulf of Maine at Newburyport, Massachusetts. The Gulf of Maine is part of the Atlantic Ocean.

North Side Water Flow

Water from the north side of Mount Garfield takes a different path. It flows into the north and south branches of the Gale River. These rivers then join the Ammonoosuc and Connecticut rivers. This water eventually empties into Long Island Sound at Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Long Island Sound is also connected to the Atlantic Ocean.

The Appalachian Trail on Mount Garfield

Mount Garfield is special because the Appalachian Trail crosses its summit. The Appalachian Trail is a very long hiking path. It stretches for about 2,170 miles (3,500 kilometers). This famous trail goes all the way from Georgia to Maine. Hikers who walk the entire trail often call themselves "thru-hikers." Walking on Mount Garfield is a small but important part of this huge adventure.
