These are buildings, areas, or objects that are important to the history of the United States. By listing them, we help protect them for future generations to learn from and enjoy.

What is the National Register of Historic Places?

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of places in the U.S. that are worth saving. These places could be buildings, neighborhoods, or even old battlefields. They are chosen because they have a special connection to American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture.

When a place is added to this list, it means it's recognized as important. It also helps protect it from being changed or destroyed, especially if federal money is involved in a project nearby. Some places are even more special and are called National Historic Landmarks (NHL). These are places that have played a major role in the history of the entire nation.
