History of Ramona

Early Beginnings
For thousands of years, the Great Plains of North America were home to nomadic Native American tribes. They moved around to hunt and gather food.
From the 1500s to the 1700s, France claimed a lot of land in North America. In 1762, after a big war called the French and Indian War, France secretly gave its land, known as New France, to Spain. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Fontainebleau.
1800s: New Ownership and Growth
In 1802, Spain gave most of this land back to France. Then, in 1803, the United States bought a huge area of land from France. This was called the Louisiana Purchase. It included most of what is now Kansas. The U.S. paid about 2.83 cents per acre for this vast land.
In 1854, the Kansas Territory was set up. Then, in 1861, Kansas officially became the 34th U.S. state. Marion County, where Ramona is located, was created in 1855.
The name "Ramona" is a Spanish name. The land where Ramona now stands was once owned by Spain. A merchant from New Orleans named Manuel De Lisa asked the Spanish government for a large piece of land in the Ramona area on July 16, 1799.
In 1887, a railroad company called the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main train line. It went from Herington through Ramona to Pratt. In 1888, this line was made even longer, reaching Liberal. Later, it stretched all the way to Tucumcari, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. This railroad line changed hands several times over the years. Today, it is part of the Union Pacific Railroad, but many local people still call it the "Rock Island" railroad.
A post office was opened in Ramona on August 9, 1887, helping the community grow.
2000s: Modern Developments
In 2010, a large oil pipeline called the Keystone-Cushing Pipeline (Phase II) was built near Ramona. It runs from north to south through Marion County. Building this pipeline caused some debate about road damage and environmental worries.
