How Redwood Shores Started

Oracle Corporation HQ
Former Oracle headquarters, a big tech company that used to be based here.

Redwood Shores was built on land that was once part of the San Francisco Bay marshes. This process is called land reclamation. It means filling in wet areas to create new land. This project started in the 1960s. It's similar to how its neighbor, Foster City, was built.

At first, the land was used by the Leslie Salt Company for making salt. They filled the soft ground, called "bay mud." However, people worried about earthquakes. The area is close to the San Andreas and Hayward faults. These are major earthquake faults. This led to big arguments between government groups and businesses. Because of these problems, Leslie Salt Company lost interest. In 1972, Bank of America took over the project.

For many years, Redwood Shores was home to a fun theme park. It was called Marine World/Africa U.S.A., California. The park operated from the 1960s until 1986. Then, it moved to Vallejo, California. It later became Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. The land where Marine World used to be has changed a lot. Now, it has homes, apartments, parks, and business offices. The company Oracle Corporation used to have its main office here. But in 2020, Oracle moved its headquarters to Texas.
