A Local Law and Its Impact
In 2006, Riverside Township passed a local law. This law aimed to address the large number of new residents, mainly from Brazil. The law suggested fines for employers who hired people without proper work permits. It also suggested fines for landlords who rented to them.
Many groups, like the ACLU, thought the law was unfair. They considered taking legal action against it. In 2007, the township decided to cancel the law. One reason was the high cost of defending it in court. After the law was canceled, many of the new residents moved to other towns in New Jersey.
