Education and Early Work

Rodrigo Tavares grew up in Castelo Branco, Portugal. He studied International Relations at NOVA University Lisbon. In 2006, he earned his PhD in Peace and Development Studies from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. He was the first person from Portugal to get a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies. His main project was about understanding peace and safety in different regions. He even traveled to Sweden to ask his favorite professor to guide his studies.

Studying in the United States

While working on his PhD, Tavares was invited to the University of California at Berkeley as a visiting student. He lived in California in 2003 and 2004.

In 2010, Tavares went back to the United States for more research at Columbia University. He was guided by a famous economics professor and had a special scholarship. During this time, he wrote a book called Security in South America.

Later, from 2014 to 2015, he worked as a senior researcher at Harvard University. He studied how cities around the world can be successful and compete globally. He wrote another book then, called Paradiplomacy: Cities and States as Global Players.

Work with the United Nations

Tavares also worked for the United Nations University, which is like a UN research center, for five years. He worked in Belgium and Ethiopia. As a researcher, he helped with studies on how different regions in Africa could work together for safety and development. He also taught at a university in Brazil from 2013 to 2018.

Current Academic Role

Today, Rodrigo Tavares is a professor at NOVA University Lisbon's School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE). He teaches about sustainable finance and how businesses can be sustainable. In 2024, Nova SBE's Master's in Finance program was ranked 7th in the world.

His academic work focuses on finding new ways to connect international relations, finance, and sustainable development. He looks at how governments, businesses, and money can work together for a better future. He started by studying how countries working together can affect society and safety. Then, he focused on how local governments, like cities, can act like global players. This is called paradiplomacy. Now, he studies how money markets, society, and the environment are connected.
