Salvo is a small community located in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. It sits on Hatteras Island, which is part of North Carolina's famous Outer Banks. In 2020, about 303 people lived in Salvo.

Long ago, Salvo was part of a larger settlement called Chicamacomico. This area also included the nearby towns of Rodanthe and Waves. Salvo was first known by other names, like "Clarks" or "Clarksville."

The name "Salvo" has an interesting story from the American Civil War. It's said that a ship from the Union army saw the settlement, but it wasn't on their maps. The officer in charge ordered an attack, and a sailor supposedly marked the spot on his map with the word "Salvo." This name officially became the town's name when it got its own post office in 1901.

Salvo's Post Office History

The Salvo Post Office (ZIP code 27972) was once one of the smallest postal buildings in the United States. Sadly, it was damaged by fire in 1992. A new post office was built a few years later to serve all of Chicamacomico. The original Salvo Post Office building was recognized for its history and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Local Government and Community

The people of Salvo are looked after by the Dare County Board of Commissioners. Salvo is part of District 4. This district also includes other Outer Banks communities like Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras, Rodanthe, and Waves.
