Samuel Beatty's Early Life and Work
Samuel Beatty was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Stark County, Ohio. In the 1840s, he served as a lieutenant in the Third Ohio Infantry. This was during the Mexican–American War. Later, in the late 1850s, he worked as the sheriff of Stark County.
Service in the Civil War
When the Civil War began, Samuel Beatty quickly formed a group of volunteers. This group became Company A of the 19th Ohio Infantry. They were known as the "Canton Light Guards." Beatty was chosen as the first colonel of this regiment.
After getting organized and trained, his regiment moved to Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio. There, they practiced more military drills. Colonel Beatty led the 19th Ohio in several battles. These fights took place in western Virginia, including the Battle of Rich Mountain.
Key Battles and Commands
In the spring of 1862, Beatty and his troops fought in the Battle of Shiloh. This was a very important and difficult battle. Later that year, he led a larger group of soldiers called a brigade. This brigade was part of the Army of the Cumberland. They fought at the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky.
During the Battle of Stones River, Samuel Beatty took charge of a larger unit called a division. This happened after his general, Horatio Van Cleve, was hurt. Beatty's soldiers were pushed back by Confederate forces. But they regrouped after Union cannons fired on the enemy.
Beatty was promoted to brigadier general in November 1862. His brave actions at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863 were highly praised. His commander, Thomas L. Crittenden, wrote about Beatty's excellent conduct.
He continued to lead a brigade in the IV Corps during the Atlanta Campaign. This was a major series of battles.
Promotion to Major General
For his actions at the Battle of Nashville, Samuel Beatty received a special honor. He was given the rank of brevet major general. This promotion was approved in 1866. It recognized his leadership during the battle. At Nashville, he led a division of soldiers. This made him the highest-ranking Union Army officer from Stark County.
Beatty finished his volunteer service on January 15, 1866.
Life After the War
After the Civil War, Samuel Beatty went back home to Stark County. He became a farmer in Jackson Township. He passed away at his home. Samuel Beatty was buried in the City Cemetery in Massillon, Ohio.
