History of Sarzens

Sarzens has a long history. It was first mentioned in old records between the years 996 and 1017. Back then, it was called villa sarningis.

Later, in 1261, its name changed slightly. It was then known as Sarsens.

Where is Sarzens?

Sarzens covered an area of about 1.4 square kilometers (0.54 square miles) in 2009. Most of this land, about 76.4%, was used for farming. This means people grew crops or raised animals there.

About 15.3% of the land was covered by forests. The remaining 9% was built-up, meaning it had buildings or roads.

Most of the built-up area was for homes and other buildings. A smaller part was for roads and transport. All the forested land was covered with thick, natural forests.

For farming, 61.8% of the land was used for growing crops. Another 13.2% was used as pastures for animals. A small part, 1.4%, was used for fruit trees or grapevines.

Sarzens used to be part of the Moudon District. This district was closed down on August 31, 2006. After that, Sarzens became part of the new Broye-Vully district.

The former town is located on hills above the Broye valley. It sits between the towns of Moudon and Lucens.

Sarzens Coat of Arms

The official design of Sarzens' coat of arms is quite interesting. It is described as Gules, three Bees Or two and one.

This means the background (called "Gules") is red. On this red background, there are three golden bees ("Or"). Two bees are placed side-by-side at the top, and one bee is placed below them.
