Sergiy Eduardovych Stakhovsky (born January 6, 1986) is a former professional tennis player from Ukraine. He became a professional player in 2003. Sergiy reached his highest ranking of World No. 31 in singles in September 2010. He was ranked No. 33 in doubles in June 2011.

Stakhovsky is famous for beating tennis legend Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013. This win ended Federer's amazing streak of reaching at least the quarterfinals in 36 Grand Slam tournaments in a row.

After retiring from tennis in January 2022, Sergiy joined the Ukrainian Army. He did this to help defend his country during the Russian invasion.

Early Tennis Career

Sergiy Stakhovsky started playing tennis at a young age. He became a top junior player, reaching No. 28 in singles in 2003. In 2004, he played in the final of the US Open junior tournament. He lost to Andy Murray, who later became a famous tennis star.

Becoming a Professional Player

Stakhovsky turned professional in 2003. He spent his early years playing in smaller tournaments called Challenger events. In 2005, he had a good win against a top-30 player, Mario Ančić. By the end of 2005, his singles ranking was No. 173. He also won two doubles Challenger tournaments that year.

Major Career Highlights

Sergiy Stakhovsky achieved several important milestones in his professional career. He won four singles titles and four doubles titles on the ATP Tour.

First ATP Tour Title (2008)

In March 2008, Stakhovsky won his first ATP Tour title at the Zagreb Indoors tournament in Croatia. This was a special win because he was a "lucky loser." This means he lost in the qualifying rounds but still got to play in the main tournament because another player dropped out. He was ranked No. 209 at the time. He beat top players like Ivan Ljubičić in the final. He was the first lucky loser to win an ATP title since 1991.

Second ATP Title (2009)

In 2009, Stakhovsky continued to play well. He reached the quarterfinals in Doha and Zagreb. He also played an important role for Ukraine's Davis Cup team. He helped his country win a match against Great Britain.

Later that year, he won his second ATP title in St. Petersburg, Russia. He had some tough matches, including beating former world No. 1 Marat Safin.

Reaching the Top 40 (2010)

The year 2010 was very successful for Stakhovsky. He won two more ATP titles. He won the UNICEF Open in the Netherlands and the Connecticut Open in the US. This made him the first Ukrainian player since 1994 to win two titles in one season.

At the US Open, he reached the third round. He had an exciting five-set win where he saved multiple match points. In September 2010, he reached his career-high singles ranking of No. 31 in the world.

Grand Slam Success (2011-2015)

Stakhovsky often played well in Grand Slam tournaments. In 2011, he was seeded (meaning he was one of the top players) at the 2011 French Open. He reached the third round there. He also made it to the third round of Wimbledon in 2013 and 2014. At the US Open, he reached the third round in 2010 and 2015.

Beating Roger Federer (2013)

One of Stakhovsky's most famous matches happened at Wimbledon in 2013. He was ranked No. 116 in the world. He played against Roger Federer, who was ranked No. 3 and had won Wimbledon seven times. Stakhovsky won the match in four sets. This was a huge upset and ended Federer's streak of reaching at least the quarterfinals in every Grand Slam since 2004.

Representing Ukraine in the Olympics (2012)

Sergiy Stakhovsky proudly represented Ukraine at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He competed in the men's singles event.

Retirement from Tennis

In January 2022, Sergiy Stakhovsky announced his retirement from professional tennis. His last match was at the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open. He had played tennis professionally for 19 years.

Joining the Ukrainian Army

Soon after retiring from tennis, Sergiy Stakhovsky returned to Ukraine. On February 27, 2022, he joined the Ukrainian Army to help defend his country. This was during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He joined a special forces unit. In February 2023, he took part in the Battle of Bakhmut.

Stakhovsky explained that he was fighting to protect his two young sons. His children live in Hungary, which is not far from the Ukrainian border. He believes that if the Russian President Vladimir Putin is not stopped in Ukraine, he might continue into other parts of Europe.

Personal Life

Sergiy Stakhovsky was married to Anfisa Bulgakova. They are now divorced. He has three children. Since 2014, he has lived in Budapest, Hungary.

Since 2018, Sergiy has also become a winemaker. He has his own area where he grows grapes in the Carpathian Ukraine region. This area is in the western part of Ukraine, near the borders with Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania.
