Denis Olegovich Istomin (born September 7, 1986) is a professional tennis player from Uzbekistan. He has won two major singles titles in his career. These wins were at the 2015 Aegon Open Nottingham and the 2017 Chengdu Open. His highest singles ranking was world No. 33 in August 2012. A big moment in his career was in January 2017. He defeated the defending champion, Novak Djokovic, at the 2017 Australian Open.

About Denis Istomin
Denis Istomin was born in Orenburg, Russia. His parents are Oleg Istomin and Klaudiya Istomina. When Denis was just three months old, his family moved to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. His mother, Klaudiya, is also his coach. She introduced him to tennis when he was very young.
Overcoming Challenges
In 2001, Denis was in a car accident. This accident caused serious injuries. Doctors initially thought he might never play tennis again. But Denis worked hard and started training again in April 2003. He showed great determination to return to the sport.
On the Court
Denis Istomin is known for wearing glasses while playing. Not many top tennis players do this. Other players who wear glasses include Janko Tipsarević and Chung Hyeon. Most players either have perfect vision or wear contact lenses.
Denis Istomin's Tennis Journey
Denis Istomin became a professional tennis player in 2004. He slowly climbed the rankings. By the end of 2005, he was among the top 200 players. He won his first Challenger tournament in Bukhara, Uzbekistan.
Early Career Highlights
In 2006, Denis played against the world's No. 1 player, Roger Federer, at the 2006 Australian Open. Even though he lost, it was a great experience. He kept improving and won more Challenger titles in 2007 and 2008. By 2008, he was ranked No. 105 in the world.
Breaking into the Top 100
In 2009, Denis entered the top 100 players for the first time. He reached world No. 56 in July. This allowed him to play in bigger tournaments, including the Grand Slam events. He made it to the third round of the US Open that year.
First ATP Final and Top 50 Ranking
In 2010, Denis reached his first ATP Final at the 2010 Pilot Pen Tennis tournament. He lost the final but showed he could compete at a high level. He also reached the third round at Wimbledon and the French Open. These results helped him reach his career-high ranking of No. 39.
Career High Ranking in 2012
The year 2012 was a big one for Denis. He reached the semi-finals in Sydney and the finals of the SAP Open. He also had a great run at the Indian Wells Masters, beating world No. 5 David Ferrer. At Wimbledon, he made it to the fourth round. This was a first for any tennis player from Uzbekistan. He also played in the Olympics, reaching the third round.
Winning Titles
In 2013, Denis won his first doubles title. He teamed up with Mikhail Elgin to win the 2013 Kremlin Cup. He won another doubles title in 2014 and a third in 2015.
His biggest singles win came in 2015 at the Nottingham Open. He defeated Sam Querrey in the final to win his first ATP singles title!
Big Win Against Novak Djokovic
In 2017, Denis was ranked No. 117 in the world. He received a special entry into the 2017 Australian Open. In the second round, he played against Novak Djokovic, who was the defending champion and world No. 2. Denis played an amazing match, winning in five sets. This was a huge upset and one of the most memorable wins of his career. He then reached the fourth round of the tournament.
Later in 2017, Denis won his second ATP singles title at the 2017 Chengdu Open. He defeated Marcos Baghdatis in the final.
Asian Games Gold Medal
In 2018, Denis won the gold medal in men's singles at the 2018 Asian Games. This victory was very important. It earned him a spot to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Recent Years and Retirement
Denis continued to play tennis in 2019 and 2020, but his ranking dropped. In 2021, he played in his third Olympics. In February 2024, Denis Istomin announced he would retire from singles tennis. He played his last singles match for Uzbekistan in the Davis Cup. However, he still plays doubles with his partner, Evgeny Karlovskiy.
