The Shredder is a famous supervillain and the main bad guy in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stories. He was created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Shredder first appeared in the comic book Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 in May 1984. Since then, he has been the biggest enemy of the Turtles and their rat teacher, Splinter.

Shredder is usually known as Oroku Saki. He is the tough leader of a criminal ninja group called the Foot Clan. Shredder wears a special suit of armor with sharp metal blades. This armor looks a bit like what a samurai might wear.

In 2009, IGN said Shredder was the 39th greatest comic book villain ever. He has been in almost every TMNT movie and TV show. Actors like James Saito and Brian Tee have played him in live-action films. Many voice actors, including James Avery and Kevin Michael Richardson, have given him his voice in cartoons.

How Shredder Was Created

Kevin Eastman got the idea for Shredder's armor from a cheese grater. He imagined a bad guy with sharp weapons on his arms. Peter Laird then suggested the name "The Shredder."

Even though Shredder is often the main villain in TMNT shows, the creators didn't plan for him to be so important in the original comics. Peter Laird once said that Shredder was a key part of the Turtles' history, but not always a constant enemy.

Shredder in Movies

Shredder has appeared in many Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. Different actors have played him over the years.

The First Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Film (1990)

In the first movie, Oroku Saki and Hamato Yoshi were rival martial artists in Japan. They both loved a woman named Tang Shen. Shen loved Yoshi, so they moved to the United States. Saki followed them to New York City. He attacked Yoshi, and during their fight, Splinter's cage broke. Splinter, who was Yoshi's pet rat, bit Saki. Saki then hurt Splinter's ear with his katana. After this, Saki disappeared for a while.

Saki, now known as Shredder, started a group called the Foot Clan in America. He used his second-in-command, Tatsu, to find and train troubled teenagers. He taught them ninjitsu to make them skilled thieves. Shredder sent the Foot Clan to stop April O'Neil from reporting on their crimes. This led the Foot Clan to the Turtles' hideout. Shredder kidnapped Splinter and held him in his hideout. He tried to make Splinter tell him how the Turtles learned their fighting skills.

After the Turtles fought the Foot Clan, Shredder faced them on a rooftop. He was very skilled and almost defeated them. Splinter, who was freed by the Turtles' friends Danny Pennington and Casey Jones, arrived. Splinter told Shredder that they had met before, as Splinter was Hamato Yoshi's pet. Shredder took off his mask, showing the scars Splinter had given him. Splinter then used Michelangelo's nunchaku to send Shredder falling into a garbage truck below. Casey Jones activated the truck's crusher, and Shredder's helmet was crushed, suggesting he was defeated.

TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991)

In the second movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, Shredder was played by François Chau. The Turtles thought Shredder was gone, but he had survived. He rebuilt his Foot Clan to get revenge. Shredder found a sample of the mutagen that created the Turtles. He used it to create his own mutants, Tokka and Rahzar, from a snapping turtle and a brown wolf. These new mutants were not very smart, but Shredder used them to his advantage.

Shredder sent Tokka and Rahzar to cause trouble in the city. He then challenged the Turtles to a rematch. The Turtles managed to turn Tokka and Rahzar back to normal. Shredder then used the last of the mutagen on himself. He transformed into a huge, powerful "Super Shredder." In a rage, Super Shredder destroyed the pier they were fighting on. The pier collapsed on him, and he was defeated.

Later TMNT Films (1993, 2007, 2014, 2016)

Shredder did not appear in the third film. He was briefly shown in the fourth film to explain the Turtles' background.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), Tohoru Masamune played Shredder. In this movie, Shredder was the leader of the Foot Clan, causing trouble in New York City. His adopted son, Eric Sacks, told Shredder about the mutated Turtles. Shredder got a powerful suit and helmet. He attacked the Turtles' lair, defeated Splinter, and kidnapped three Turtles. Shredder and Sacks planned to release a virus and then sell a cure made from the Turtles' blood. The Turtles escaped and fought Shredder. They defeated him with April's help, and he fell from a building. He survived and still had some mutagen.

Brian Tee played Shredder in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016). Shredder escaped from prison with the help of a scientist named Baxter Stockman. He was teleported to Dimension X, where he met Krang. Krang gave Shredder mutagen in exchange for help finding parts of a machine. Shredder returned to New York and used Krang's mutagen to turn two criminals, Bebop and Rocksteady, into animal mutants. Shredder found the machine parts and opened a portal to Krang's dimension. However, Krang betrayed Shredder, freezing him and adding him to his collection of defeated enemies.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019)

Andrew Kishino voiced Shredder in the animated crossover film Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In this movie, Shredder teamed up with Ra's al Ghul and the League of Assassins. Their plan was to build a machine to turn people in Gotham into mutants. Shredder fought Batman and almost won.

Later, he fought Batman again. The Turtles and the Bat-Family arrived to stop the machine. Batman defeated Shredder. After the machine was destroyed, Shredder fell into a vat of chemicals. In a scene after the credits, it was shown that he survived and looked a lot like the Joker.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

Shredder makes a brief appearance at the end of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. A character named Cynthia Utrom plans to hire him to catch the Ninja Turtles.

Shredder in Video Games

Shredder has been a major character in many TMNT video games. Often, he is the final boss.

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES, 1989): Shredder is the last boss. He can hurt the Turtles a lot and has a gun that can turn them back into regular turtles, which defeats them instantly.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (arcade, 1989): Shredder is again the final boss. He can make copies of himself and shoot lightning from his helmet.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan (1990): In this game, Shredder is a boss in an earlier stage, not the final one. He can teleport when hit.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project (1992): This game features two battles with Shredder. First, he fights with a sword. Later, he turns into Super Shredder, just like in the second movie. Super Shredder can call down lightning and shoot fireballs.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (1991): Shredder is the final boss. He attacks with a sword and energy blasts. In the SNES version, he becomes Super Shredder at the start of the fight. Super Shredder has super-speed and can use fire and ice attacks.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist (1992): This game also features a Super Shredder similar to the one in Turtles in Time.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Radical Rescue (1993): Shredder is the final boss here, but he is Cyber Shredder, a mix of man and machine. He has strong kicks and energy ball attacks.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (1993): This is the first game where Shredder is a character you can play as, not just a boss.

After a break, new TMNT games came out based on the 2003 cartoon series. Shredder in these games is like his cartoon version.

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003): Shredder is the final boss. He is very fast and uses the Sword of Tengu.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus (2004): Shredder appears in this game but is not directly fought by the player in the main story. He is seemingly defeated multiple times but always survives.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Melee (2005): Shredder is a playable character in this fighting game. He appears in his armor, without armor (as Oroku Saki), and as a golden "Mega" Shredder.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare (2005): The Turtles and Splinter fight Shredder at his headquarters and on his spaceship. The Utroms rescue the Turtles and send Shredder to a far-off ice asteroid.
  • TMNT (2007): Shredder appears as a boss in a flashback. His armor looks like the 2003 cartoon version.
  • TMNT: Smash Up (2009): Shredder is a playable character in this fighting game. He appears in both his Utrom Shredder and Cyber Shredder forms.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2013): Shredder is a boss twice in this game. He gets new telekinetic powers from a helmet built by Baxter Stockman.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) (Nintendo 3DS): Shredder, who is Eric Sacks in this game, is the final boss. But it turns out to be an illusion.
  • Nickelodeon Kart Racers (2018): Shredder appears in the background of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles race tracks.
  • Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix (2020): Shredder is a playable racer.
  • Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl (2021): Shredder is a playable character in this fighting game.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (2022): Shredder is a boss in this game. He appears in his normal form and then as Super Shredder.

Other Appearances

In the anime Mutant Turtles: Choujin Densetsu-hen, Shredder's look was changed to match a toy. He could also turn into a dragon called Devil Shredder. Later, he could become the giant Dark Devil Shredder.

Shredder also appeared in an episode of the YouTube show Death Battle. His skills were compared to another villain, Silver Samurai. Shredder won the fight.

Shredder is a character you can buy in the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. This version is based on his original comic book look.

In the 2022 Disney+ film Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, an arm from the 2003 Shredder appears as part of a character called Sweet Pete.
