History of Sutton
Sutton was officially created on February 26, 1782. The Vermont government gave permission for the town to be built. It was first called Billymead. This name came from William, the younger son of Dr. Jonathan Arnold, who helped start the town.
However, by 1810, the people living in Billymead were not happy with William. They thought he was a bully and drank too much. So, in a town meeting, they voted to change the name. They chose the name Sutton instead.
Today, Sutton has a few small communities within it. These include Sutton, Sutton Depot, and Summit Siding. In 2010, the town had 1,029 people.
Geography of Sutton
Sutton is in the northern part of Caledonia County. It shares its borders with several other towns. To the south is Lyndon, and to the southwest is Wheelock. Sheffield is to the west, and Barton is to the northwest. To the north, you'll find Westmore. Newark is to the northeast, and Burke is to the east.
The town covers about 99.4 square kilometers (38.4 square miles) in total. Most of this area is land, about 98.9 square kilometers (38.2 square miles). A small part, about 0.5 square kilometers (0.2 square miles), is water.
The highest point in Sutton is the top of Mount Hor. It is in the northern part of the town. Mount Hor is about 809.5 meters (2,656 feet) above sea level. Because Sutton is fairly high up, its weather is a bit cooler and wetter than nearby towns. For example, it gets more snow than St. Johnsbury. The center of town usually gets over 100 inches of snow each year.
Climate in Sutton
Sutton has a type of weather called a humid continental climate. This means it has big changes in temperature throughout the year. Summers are warm to hot, and winters are very cold.
What's interesting is that Sutton has had two official weather stations. These stations collect information about the weather.
- The first station was in a low area, like a valley, about 1,000 feet high. It collected data from 1948 until 2017. At this station, it has frozen in every month of the year. But it has also reached at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit in every month.
- A newer station was built in 2000 on a hill, about 500 feet higher. This station is still working today.
These two stations show that Sutton has different "microclimates." A microclimate is a small area with slightly different weather than the areas around it. The hill station has less extreme temperatures. Its lowest temperatures are warmer, and its highest temperatures are cooler. Even though it's higher up, the hill station's temperatures are a bit warmer overall. It also gets more rain and snow.
