Tanzania first joined the Olympic Games in 1964. Since then, Tanzanian athletes have competed in almost every Summer Olympic Games. They did not go to the 1976 Games because of a boycott. Tanzania has never taken part in the Winter Olympic Games.

Tanzanian athletes have won two medals in total. Both of these medals were won in athletics, which includes sports like running and jumping.

The National Olympic Committee for Tanzania was started in 1968. The International Olympic Committee officially recognized it in the same year. This committee helps organize Tanzania's participation in the Olympics.

For a long time, Tanzania only sent athletes for athletics events. But things have changed recently! At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Tanzania sent its first team for swimming. This team included the country's first female athlete to compete in a sport other than athletics. Tanzania also sent female swimmers to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Even with these new sports, Tanzania's Olympic team is still quite small.
