Thann is a small town in north-eastern France. It is located in a region called Alsace. Thann is part of the Haut-Rhin department. It is also a "subprefecture," which means it's an important administrative center for a part of the department. Thann is found in the larger Grand Est region of France.
This town is rich in history and culture, being a key part of the Alsace region. The name "Thann" comes from the German word tanne, which means "fir tree." You can even see a fir tree on Thann's official coat of arms!

Thann is located in the southwest part of the Haut-Rhin department. It sits at the bottom of the Vosges mountains. The town is also at the entrance of the valley where the Thur river flows. The Thur river actually runs right through the middle of Thann.
The town covers an area of about 12.5 square kilometers (about 4.8 square miles). Its average height above sea level is 625 meters (about 2,051 feet). At the town hall, the height is 329 meters (about 1,079 feet).
Thann is about 121 kilometers (75 miles) from Strasbourg, which is the capital city of the region. It's also about 42 kilometers (26 miles) from Colmar, the capital of the department. The city of Mulhouse is only about 21 kilometers (13 miles) away.
Thann is surrounded by several other towns. These include Goldbach-Altenbach, Vieux-Thann, Leimbach, and Bitschwiller-lès-Thann.
