Tomáš Kaberle (born March 2, 1978) is a former professional ice hockey player from the Czech Republic. He was a defenceman, which is a player who helps protect their team's goal. Tomáš played for many teams in the National Hockey League (NHL), including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, and Montreal Canadiens. He even won the famous Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins!
Tomáš Kaberle was a four-time NHL All-Star, which means he was chosen as one of the best players in the league. He also played for the Czech national team and won a bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics. He is known as the second-highest scoring defenceman in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs team.

About Tomáš Kaberle
Tomáš Kaberle was born in a town called Rakovník in the Czech Republic. His family is from a place called Velká Dobrá, which is close to Kladno.
A Hockey Family
Hockey runs in Tomáš's family! His older brother, František, also played as a defenceman in the NHL. Their father, František, Sr., was also a hockey player. He played for the Czechoslovakia national team in the 1970s and 1980s.
Playing Career Highlights
Starting with the Toronto Maple Leafs
Tomáš Kaberle was chosen by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He was picked 204th overall in the eighth round. He started playing for the Leafs in the 1998–99 season.
He began to play more often in the 1999–2000 season when another player, Bryan Berard, got injured. By the 2001–02 season, Tomáš had become so good that he was chosen for the 2002 NHL All-Star Game. That same year, he also joined the Czech national team for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
In 2006, Tomáš signed a new contract with the Maple Leafs that would keep him with the team until the end of the 2010–11 season.
First Hat-Trick
On October 28, 2006, Tomáš Kaberle scored his first career hat-trick against the Montreal Canadiens. A hat-trick in hockey means scoring three goals in one game! He was also chosen to be an All-Star player for the second time in his career in January 2007.
Injury and Return
During a game on March 2, 2007, Tomáš got a concussion after a hit from another player. He had to be carried off the ice. After missing eight games, he returned to play for the Leafs on March 23.
Tomáš was known for scoring important goals in overtime. He scored seven overtime goals during his career.
All-Star Skills
At the 2008 NHL All-Star Game Skills Competition, Tomáš showed off his amazing accuracy. He was only the fourth player ever to hit all four targets in four shots during the accuracy challenge. He tried to defend his title at the 2009 NHL All-Star Game but didn't win that time.
In the 2009–10 season, Tomáš helped the Leafs get their first win of the season against the Anaheim Ducks. He had one goal and four assists in that game. He started that season very well, leading all defencemen in scoring with 22 points in his first 20 games. On December 1, 2009, he became the second-highest scoring defenceman in Maple Leafs history.
Later NHL Teams
On February 18, 2011, Tomáš Kaberle was traded to the Boston Bruins. This was a big trade that many people talked about. He ended up winning the Stanley Cup with the Bruins on June 15, 2011, after they beat the Vancouver Canucks. Winning the Stanley Cup is one of the biggest achievements in hockey!
After winning the Cup, Tomáš signed a contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on July 5, 2011. He played 29 games for them before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens on December 9, 2011. In his first game with the Canadiens, he had two assists.
Returning to Czech Republic Hockey
During the 2012–13 NHL lockout, when NHL games were paused, Tomáš went back to his home country to play for HC Kladno. After playing ten games, he decided to take a break to spend more time with his family. He returned to the Canadiens for a short time, but didn't play many games.
In June 2013, the Canadiens released Tomáš from his contract. He then signed a one-year contract to play for his hometown club, HC Kladno, again in September 2013.
In September 2014, he tried out for the New Jersey Devils but was not offered a contract. On September 22, 2016, HC Kladno announced that Tomáš Kaberle had officially retired from professional hockey.

Tomáš Kaberle played for the Czech national team in many international tournaments.
He played in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Tomáš and his older brother František were both on the Czech team that won a gold medal at the 2005 World Ice Hockey Championships. While it was František's fifth gold medal, it was Tomáš's first!
In December 2005, both brothers were chosen for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, where they won bronze medals. The next year, Tomáš played in the 2006 World Championships and the Czech team won a silver medal. He also played in the 2010 Winter Olympics.
After Hockey
After retiring from hockey, Tomáš Kaberle helped his wife, Julia Kaberle, with her Italian restaurant. He even delivered takeout orders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
