Yelena Valeryevna Välbe (Russian: Елена Валерьевна Вяльбе, born April 20, 1968) is a famous Russian former cross-country skier. She holds a record of 14 gold medals at the FIS World Championships. This includes winning all five gold medals at the 1997 championships.
Yelena also earned three Olympic gold medals, all in relay races. She won four bronze medals at various Winter Olympic Games. She also won the overall World Cup title five times.
After her skiing career, Yelena Välbe became involved in sports leadership. She was elected President of the Russian Cross-Country Ski Association in 2010. She also managed the Russian National Cross-Country Team starting in 2012. In 2021, she was chosen to be part of the FIS Council. However, she was later removed from this position. This happened after she made controversial statements about a major international conflict. Several European Ski Federations objected to her staying on the council.

Skiing Career Highlights
Yelena Välbe had an amazing career in cross-country skiing. She won many medals and titles.
World Championship Success
At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, Yelena Välbe won 14 gold medals. These included:
- 1989: 10 km freestyle and 30 km races.
- 1991: 10 km, 15 km, and 4 × 5 km relay.
- 1993: 15 km and 4 × 5 km relay.
- 1995: 30 km and 4 × 5 km relay.
Her biggest achievement was at the 1997 championships in Trondheim. There, she won all five gold medals available. These were in the 5 km, 5 km + 10 km combined pursuit, 15 km, 30 km, and 4 × 5 km relay events. She also won three silver medals at the World Championships.
Olympic Games Achievements
Yelena Välbe won three gold medals at the Winter Olympics. All of these were in relay races. She also earned four bronze medals in individual events. At the 1992 Winter Olympics, she competed in every cross-country skiing event and won a medal in each one.
World Cup Dominance
Yelena Välbe won the overall FIS Cross-Country World Cup title five times. These victories were in 1989, 1991, 1992, 1995, and 1997. This shows her consistent top performance over many years.
Leadership Roles
After she stopped competing, Yelena Välbe took on important roles in sports management.
Leading Russian Skiing
In 2010, Yelena Välbe was chosen to be the President of the Russian Cross-Country Ski Association. She also became the manager for the Russian Cross-Country Team in 2012. She led the team for events like the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. She had also managed the Russian team during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
International Sports Council
In 2021, Yelena Välbe was elected to the FIS Council. This is an important international sports body. However, in 2022, she was removed from this position. This happened after she expressed strong views on a major international conflict. Several European Ski Federations objected to her continued participation. She received the fewest votes among the 23 candidates in the 2022 election.
Personal Life
Yelena Välbe's father, Valery Ivanovich Trubitsyn, was born in Ukraine. They are not in contact.
Yelena was once married to Estonian cross-country skier Urmas Välbe. They had a son named Franz. They divorced in 2005.
