The year 1372 was a time of important changes across Europe and Asia. Cities started new ways of dating their money, and big battles reshaped who controlled the seas. New rulers also took power in different kingdoms, showing how history was always moving forward.

Events of 1372

New Ways to Date Money

  • The city of Aachen in Germany made history in 1372. It became the first city ever to put a Roman numeral date on some of its coins. This date was based on the Anno Domini system, which counts years from the birth of Jesus. This was a big step in how people kept track of time on their money.

Big Sea Battle: La Rochelle

  • A major naval battle happened near La Rochelle in 1372. The ships from France and Castile (a kingdom in what is now Spain) worked together. They fought against the English navy. The French and Castilian forces won this important Battle of La Rochelle. This victory meant that France gained control of the English Channel again. They had not controlled it since the year 1340.

New Rulers Take Power

  • In Morocco, a young boy named Muhammad as-Said became the new Sultan. He was only four years old when he took over from his father, Abu l-Fariz Abdul Aziz I.
  • In Ethiopia, a new ruler also came to power. Newaya Maryam became the leader, following his father, Newaya Krestos.

Welsh Prince's Plans

  • Owain Lawgoch, a Welsh prince, tried for a second time to take the throne of Wales from the English. He planned to attack the island of Guernsey. However, he stopped his invasion to join the French and Castilians in fighting the English at the Battle of La Rochelle.

Peace and New Connections

  • Good news came for the kingdoms of Sicily and Naples. They declared peace between each other in 1372.
  • Far away in Asia, the Kingdom of Chūzan (which is now part of southern Japan) started a special relationship with Ming Dynasty China. This was called a "tributary relation." It meant Chūzan would send gifts or payments to China as a sign of respect and friendship.
