The 2013 AFC U-22 Championship was the first time this big football tournament was held. It's also known as the 2013 AFC U-22 Asian Cup. The country chosen to host the event was Oman.

The tournament was originally planned for June and July 2013. However, it was moved to January 11 to 26, 2014. This change happened because of another football event, the 2013 EAFF East Asian Cup.

Choosing the Host Country

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is in charge of football in Asia. Their committee decided that Oman would host the 2013 tournament. This decision was made on July 18, 2012. Only two countries, Oman and Thailand, wanted to host the competition.

How Teams Qualified

To play in the main tournament, teams first had to go through a qualification stage. The draw to decide the qualification groups happened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This was on February 14, 2012.

A total of 41 national teams took part in these qualifying matches. The group matches were first set for June 23 to July 3, 2012. But the dates were later changed to June 2 to 10, 2012. This change was made because Nepal asked for it.

Team Players

For this tournament, players had to be born on or after January 1, 1991. This rule ensures that only players aged 22 or younger (at the start of the year) could compete.

Group Stage Matches

The tournament started with a group stage. Teams were divided into groups and played against each other. The draw for these groups happened on August 24, 2013, in Muscat.

If two or more teams finished with the same number of points in their group, special rules were used to decide who ranked higher:

  • First, they looked at the points earned in matches between just those tied teams.
  • Then, they checked the goal difference from those matches.
  • Next, they counted the goals scored in those matches.
  • After that, they looked at the goal difference from all group matches.
  • Then, they counted the goals scored in all group matches.
  • If only two teams were tied and playing their last group match, a penalty shootout could decide their rank.
  • Finally, they looked at how many yellow and red cards teams received. The team with fewer cards ranked higher.
  • If all else failed, a drawing of lots (like picking names from a hat) would decide.

All match times are local to Oman (UTC+4).

Knockout Stage Matches

After the group stage, the top teams moved on to the knockout stage. In this part of the tournament, if a match was a draw after normal time, they would play extra time. If it was still a draw after extra time, a penalty shoot-out would decide the winner. The losing team was eliminated.
