AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies is a special list of the top 100 movies made in the United States. The American Film Institute (AFI) created this list in 1998. The TV channel CBS showed a special program about the list.

To be on this important list, movies had to meet certain rules:

  • They had to be made in the United States.
  • Their main language had to be English.
  • They needed to be longer than 60 minutes.
  • They had to be well-known and liked by many people, including critics and audiences. They also needed to be recognized at award shows and festivals.
  • They had to leave a lasting mark on American history and society.
