What Does the Name ASUS Mean?
The company's name, ASUS, comes from a famous winged horse in Greek mythology called Pegasus. The founders only used the last four letters of "Pegasus". They did this so the name would appear high up in alphabetical lists.
ASUS has used different slogans over the years. From 2003 to 2009, their slogan was Rock Solid. Heart Touching. Then, from 2009 to 2013, it was Inspiring Innovation Persistent Perfection. Since 2013, their slogan has been In Search of Incredible.
How Did ASUS Start?
ASUS was started in Taipei in 1989 by four friends: T.H. Tung, Ted Hsu, Wayne Hsieh, and M.T. Liao. All of them used to work as engineers at another company called Acer. Back then, Taiwan was not a leader in making computer parts.
A big company called Intel Corporation would usually give new computer processors to larger, more famous companies first. Taiwanese companies had to wait about six months to get them. But ASUS changed that! They built a test motherboard for a new Intel processor without even having the actual processor. When they asked Intel for a processor to test it, Intel had a problem with their own motherboard. ASUS helped Intel fix their problem. It turned out that ASUS's motherboard worked perfectly! After that, ASUS started getting Intel's new processors before other companies.
In 2005, ASUS started making LCD TVs. In 2006, they teamed up with Lamborghini to create special laptop computers. ASUS also helped make some of the first small, portable computers called Microsoft Origami models. In 2007, ASUS launched the very popular Eee PC, a small and affordable laptop.
In 2008, ASUS changed how its business was set up. It split into three separate companies. ASUS focused on making its own branded computers and electronics. Another company, Pegatron, focused on making parts for other companies.
In 2010, ASUS and Garmin stopped working together on smartphones. In the same year, ASUS launched the world's thinnest laptop at the time, the Asus U36. In 2013, ASUS stopped making the Eee PC series. This was because more people were buying tablets and Ultrabooks instead. In 2022, the company showed off its new logo.
