Atascosa County is a county located in the state of Texas. It is in South Texas. The main town and government center is Jourdanton.
In 2020, about 48,981 people lived here. Atascosa County is part of the larger San Antonio area.

History of Atascosa County
Atascosa County was created in 1856 by the Texas Legislature. It was formed from parts of Bexar County. The county was named after the Atascosa River.
Geography of Atascosa County
Atascosa County covers a total area of about 1,221 square miles. Most of this area is land. Only a small part, about 1.9 square miles, is covered by water.
The county has gentle, rolling hills. These hills slope down towards the southeast. The Atascosa River flows through the county and leaves it in the southeast corner. The highest point in the county is a small hill near the border with Bexar County. It is about 810 feet above sea level.

In 2010, about 84.9% of the people were White. About 0.8% were Black or African American. Around 0.8% were Native American. About 61.9% of the people were of Hispanic or Latino background.
In 2000, there were 38,628 people living in the county. There were 12,816 households. Many households, 41.7%, had children under 18 living with them. The average household had about 3 people.
