The Big N’ Tasty is a popular hamburger sold by the worldwide fast food company, McDonald's. It was created to be a competitor to the Whopper sandwich from Burger King. A very similar burger, called the Big Tasty, is sold in many countries outside the United States. This version doesn't have the "N'" in its name and is available in places like Europe, South America, South Africa, the Middle East, and Taiwan.

What's in the Big N' Tasty?

The Big N' Tasty usually has a seasoned beef patty that weighs about a quarter-pound (113.4 grams). It comes with ketchup, mayonnaise, sliced onions, two pickle slices, fresh lettuce, and a slice of tomato. All these ingredients are served on a sesame seed bun.

Big Tasty in other countries

The Big Tasty, which is sold in many countries, is a bit different. It has a larger beef patty (about 151 grams) and a bigger sesame seed bun. Instead of regular lettuce, it uses square-cut lettuce. It also has two slices of tomato, sliced onions, three slices of Emmental cheese, and a special "Big Tasty sauce" that tastes smoky.

There's also a version called the Big Tasty Bacon. This one includes strips of crispy bacon along with all the other ingredients. This bacon version is mostly found outside the U.S.

Different versions around the world

McDonald's often changes its menu items to fit local tastes. Here are some examples of how the Big N' Tasty or Big Tasty has been changed in different places:

  • McOz: In Australia, this burger used to have beetroot, lettuce, tomato, onion, Cheddar cheese, ketchup, and mustard. It has come and gone from the menu over the years.
  • McXtra: This was the name of the sandwich in Quebec, Canada.
  • The Boss: In New Zealand, this burger has two quarter-pound beef patties, making it a half-pound of beef! It also includes cheese, mayonnaise, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, and onion.
  • Big Tasty with Chili Salsa: In South Korea, the Big Tasty comes with a spicy "chili salsa sauce."
  • Big N' Tasty in Malaysia: This version has a quarter-pound beef patty, fresh lettuce, pickles, chopped onion, two slices of tomato, a slice of cheese, and a special sauce with ketchup on a sesame bun.
  • Chicken Tasty: In Sweden, you can find a version made with a chicken fillet instead of beef. It doesn't have the smoky sauce.
  • McRoyal Deluxe: In Spain, this burger is called a McRoyal Deluxe. If it has bacon, it's called McRoyal Bacon Deluxe.

History of the Big N' Tasty

McDLT Packaging
This picture shows the special packaging for the McDLT burger from its original design plan.

The Big N' Tasty is part of a series of burgers McDonald's created to compete with Burger King's Whopper.

Early competitors

The first burger in this series was the McDLT, launched in 1984. It was unique because it came in a special Styrofoam container with two parts. One side held the hot beef patty and bottom bun, while the other held the cold ingredients like lettuce, tomato, and cheese. The idea was to keep the hot side hot and the cold side cold until you were ready to eat it. McDonald's stopped selling the McDLT around 1990 because they wanted to use less Styrofoam, which was not good for the environment.

After the McDLT, McDonald's tried other burgers. In 1991, they introduced the McLean Deluxe, which was a lower-fat burger. Then came the Arch Deluxe in 1996, which was aimed at adults and had a special Dijon mustard-based mayonnaise. Neither of these burgers became very popular.

The Big N' Tasty arrives

The Big N' Tasty was first introduced in 1997. It was tested in California before being rolled out across the United States in 2000. For a while, from 2002 to 2003, the Big N' Tasty was one of the main items on McDonald's Dollar Menu, meaning it was sold for a low price. However, it was later removed from the Dollar Menu to make space for the Double Cheeseburger. McDonald's stopped selling the Big N' Tasty in the U.S. on January 1, 2011. But, you can still find it at McDonald's restaurants on U.S. army and naval bases in some parts of the world.

Big Tasty around the world

The Big Tasty was first tested in Sweden in 2003 and then released nationally. In the United Kingdom, it launched in December 2003 with a fun advertising slogan. It has been brought back to the UK menu many times as a special, limited-time offer, especially during winter and summer. The Big Tasty is still available in countries like Latvia, Norway, Greece, and most McDonald's in Sweden. It was also introduced in the Philippines.
