The Cayman Islands first joined the Olympic Games in 1976. Since then, they have taken part in every Summer Games. The only time they missed out was in the 1980 Summer Olympics. This was because they joined a boycott led by the United States. So far, the Cayman Islands have not won any Olympic medals.
After Jamaica became independent in 1962, the Cayman Islands became a separate British Overseas Territory. This means it is a territory that belongs to the United Kingdom. The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee was created in 1973. It was officially recognized in 1976, just in time for their first Olympic appearance.
The Cayman Islands also made their first appearance at the Winter Olympic Games in 2010 Winter Olympics.
