Christian Olsson's Life and Career
Christian Olsson was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. He became well-known in the sports world in 2001. That year, he won a silver medal at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics.
He holds the Swedish national record for triple jump outdoors. This record is 17.79 meters, set at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He also holds the indoor national record of 17.83 meters, set in 2004. Christian has won the Swedish Championships seven times. He was also a good high jumper in national competitions.
On March 7, 2004, at the 2004 World Indoor Championships in Athletics, he jumped 17.83 meters. This jump matched the World Record at the time. A few months later, on August 23, 2004, he competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He jumped 17.79 meters, which broke his own national record. He won the gold medal, becoming the first Swede to do so in 92 years. Four of his six jumps in that competition were better than the silver medalist's best jump.
Winning the Olympic Gold medal was a huge achievement. It meant he had won all the major international titles. These included the Olympic, World Indoor, World Outdoor, European Indoor, and European Outdoor championships.
Christian first became interested in triple jump by watching Jonathan Edwards. He saw Edwards set a world record in Gothenburg in 1995. Since 1999, Christian was coached by Yannick Tregaro. Before that, his coach was Viljo Nousiainen.
After the 2004 Olympics, Christian had a foot injury. This injury made it hard for him to triple jump at full speed. It healed very slowly, causing problems even in 2006. In June 2006, he finally competed again and jumped 17.09 meters. He seemed to be getting back in shape. A month later, he won a gold medal at the 2006 European Championships in Athletics in his hometown. He jumped 17.67 meters there.
In early 2007, Christian got injured again. This stopped him from competing in the European indoor championships. He returned to competition in June 2007, jumping 17.33 meters. In July, he won another event with a jump of 17.56 meters. However, he had to stop early in a later event due to a cramp.
Christian went to the 2007 World Championships in Athletics. But he had to withdraw before competing because of an injury during training.
After almost a year of rehabilitation, he tried to compete again in July 2008. This was at an event in Stockholm. However, he had to pull out due to another injury. After this, he announced he would not compete for the rest of 2008. This meant he missed the Beijing Olympics. He even thought about retiring from the sport. Still, he agreed to carry the Swedish flag at the Olympic opening ceremony.
In July 2009, Christian made a comeback in a smaller event. He jumped 17.24 meters. On August 3, 2009, he competed in the Swedish Championships. He won with a jump of 16.72 meters. This was the first time since 2003 that he didn't jump 17 meters or more in a competition.
On May 14, 2012, Christian Olsson officially announced his retirement. He stopped competing professionally in triple jump. Christian Olsson now lives with his family in Lindome, which is south of Göteborg.
