Coffee County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. In 2020, about 43,092 people lived here. The main city and county seat is Douglas. Coffee County is part of the Douglas, Georgia, micropolitan area. This means it's a smaller city area that is connected to a larger city.

History of Coffee County
Coffee County was created on February 9, 1854. It was formed from parts of Clinch, Irwin, Telfair, and Ware counties. These lands were originally given up by the Creek in treaties signed in 1814 and 1818.
Later, some new counties were formed from parts of Coffee County. These include Berrien (in 1856), Jeff Davis (in 1905), and Atkinson (in 1917).
The county is named after General John E. Coffee. He was an important person who served in the state government and as a representative for the U.S.
Many of the first people who settled in Coffee County are buried in old cemeteries. One special place is the cemetery at Lone Hill United Methodist Church. It's about 10 miles northeast of Douglas. This church and its cemetery have been around since the 1840s.
A very old and large Eastern Redcedar tree stands in this cemetery. It's known as the nation's largest of its kind. This tree has been featured in magazines like the Smithsonian Magazine. It's a truly amazing natural landmark!
Geography of Coffee County
Coffee County covers about 603 square miles. Most of this area, about 575 square miles, is land. The rest, about 28 square miles, is water.
Most of Coffee County is in the Satilla River area. This river flows into the St. Marys-Satilla River basin. A small part of the northern county is in the Lower Ocmulgee River area. This river flows into the Altamaha River basin. The very southwestern part of the county is in the Alapaha River area. This river flows into the Suwannee River basin.

Education in Coffee County
The city of Douglas is home to South Georgia State College. This college is the oldest two-year school in the University System of Georgia.
