Cyber Monday is a special day for online shopping. It happens on the Monday after Thanksgiving in the United States. Retailers created this day to encourage people to buy things online.
The name "Cyber Monday" was first used on November 28, 2005. It was created by Ellen Davis and Scott Silverman from Shop.org. They noticed that many people were shopping online the Monday after Thanksgiving.
Cyber Monday is like the online version of Black Friday. It helps smaller online stores compete with bigger ones. Now, it's a popular shopping day all over the world.
In 2020, Cyber Monday was the biggest online shopping day ever in the U.S. People spent a total of $10.7 billion!

History of Cyber Monday
The idea for "Cyber Monday" came about in 2005. Ellen Davis coined the term. Scott Silverman from Shop.org noticed that the Monday after Thanksgiving was already a big day for online sales.
Many people used to have slow internet at home. So, they would wait until they were back at work on Monday to do their online shopping. This is how the idea of a special shopping day for online deals came to be.
Cyber Monday Around the World
Cyber Monday is not just in the United States. Many countries now have their own versions of this big online shopping day.
Argentina
Argentina celebrated Cyber Monday on November 11, 2014. Online sales grew a lot compared to the year before.
Australia
In 2012, Australian online stores started a similar event called "Click Frenzy." Many websites had problems because so many people tried to shop at once!
Belgium
Cyber Monday has become popular in Belgium since 2016. Online sales on this day have increased by 50% compared to 2015.
Canada
Cyber Monday came to Canada in 2008. Canadian stores started having their own sales to keep shoppers from buying only from U.S. stores. By 2011, about 80% of Canadian online stores joined in.
Chile
Chile's first Cyber Monday was on November 28, 2011. In 2015, 85 stores took part, making $83 million in sales. A lot of these sales were made on mobile phones.
Colombia
Colombia's first Cyber Monday happened on November 26, 2012. It was organized by the Colombian Chamber of Electronic Commerce.
France
France started using the term Cyber Monday in 2008, inspired by the U.S. event.
Germany
Amazon.de brought Cyber Monday to Germany in 2010. They even made it into an 8-day event called "Cyber Monday week."
India
India had its own version of Cyber Monday called the "Great Online Shopping Festival." It started on December 12, 2012. Many big online companies in India took part. However, this event stopped in 2015.
Japan
Amazon.co.jp registered Cyber Monday with the Japan Anniversary Association in 2012. They ran a "Cyber Monday Seven Day Sale."
Netherlands
The Netherlands started using the term Cyber Monday in 2012. It's a great time for shopping before the Sinterklaas holiday, where people buy gifts. Its popularity has grown a lot each year.
New Zealand
The first Cyber Monday sale in New Zealand was held by an online store called Belly Beyond on November 29, 2010.
Portugal
Portugal first used the term Cyber Monday in 2009.
Romania
In Romania, Cyber Monday happens the Monday after their own Black Friday. Romanian retailers often hold Black Friday a week before the U.S. date.
Sweden
Cyber Monday is growing fast in Sweden. Many large online stores have special Cyber Monday sales. It became popular there around 2010.
United Kingdom
In the UK, "Cyber Monday" is known as one of the busiest online shopping days of the year. It usually falls on the same day as the U.S. Cyber Monday.

- In 2006, online spending on Cyber Monday was $608 million.
- By 2010, it became the first day ever to reach over $1 billion in online sales, hitting $1.028 billion.
- In 2013, sales reached $2.29 billion.
- In 2016, Cyber Monday set a new record with $3.45 billion in sales. This was the first time online sales on a single day went over $3 billion in U.S. history.
- In 2018, online spending reached $7.9 billion.
- In 2019, total online sales reached a record $9.4 billion.
Many people used to do their Cyber Monday shopping from work computers. This was because they had faster internet there. It also helped them buy gifts without family members seeing!
