The word "dastarkhwan" can mean a tablecloth that is spread out. This cloth is often placed on the ground, floor, or a table. It creates a clean surface for the food. But the term also refers to the entire meal setting. This includes the food, the people, and the way the meal is shared.

In Mughal India, a famous cookbook called Dastarkhwan-e-Awadh talked about how important the dastarkhwan was. This book focused on the Awadhi cuisine from Lucknow.
