Ederson's Football Journey
Starting in Brazil and Portugal
Ederson began his football career in 2008 in his hometown of Osasco, Brazil. He played for São Paulo FC for one season. After that, he moved to Portugal and joined Benfica's youth team. He spent two years there as a junior player. In 2011, he left Benfica and signed with Second Division club Ribeirão.
A year later, in 2012, Ederson joined Primeira Liga club Rio Ave. He signed a contract that lasted until 2014. In April 2015, he was playing very well. He was even called up to the Brazil under-23 squad. Because of his good performances, he signed a new contract with Rio Ave until 2019.
Success with Benfica

On June 27, 2015, Ederson returned to Benfica, who were the Portuguese champions. In July, he officially signed a five-year contract. The deal was worth €500,000, and his release clause was set at €45 million. Rio Ave kept 50% of his future transfer rights.
During the 2015–16 season, Ederson was the second-choice goalkeeper. The main goalkeeper was Júlio César. Ederson played some games for the reserve team, Benfica B. He also played in the Taça da Liga for the main team. On March 5, 2016, he made his Primeira Liga debut. He played against local rivals Sporting CP because Júlio César was injured. Benfica won the game 1–0 and took first place in the league.
Ederson then helped Benfica win 11 more games. This secured Benfica's 35th league title, their third in a row. Five days later, he played in the Taça da Liga final against Marítimo. Benfica won that match 6–2. He also played three games in the Champions League. Benfica reached the quarter-finals that season. In his next season, Ederson and Benfica won three trophies. They won the Primeira Liga, the Taça de Portugal, and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.
Joining Manchester City
On June 1, 2017, Benfica announced that Ederson had joined Premier League club Manchester City. The transfer fee was £35 million (€40 million). At that time, this made him one of the most expensive goalkeepers ever.
Ederson quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester City. He made his first game for the club on August 12, 2017. It was a 2–0 away win against Brighton & Hove Albion, and he kept a clean sheet. On September 9, during a game against Liverpool, Ederson was accidentally kicked in the face by Sadio Mané. He had to leave the game and received eight stitches. Mané was sent off for the foul. Ederson played his next game a week later in the Champions League. He wore protective headgear for that match. Ederson believed the collision was an accident and accepted Mané's apology.
On August 19, 2018, Ederson made history for Manchester City. He became the first City goalkeeper to provide an assist in the Premier League. His long goal-kick led to a goal by Sergio Agüero. This happened in a 6–1 win over Huddersfield Town. In the 2019 EFL Cup final, he saved a penalty in a shootout against Chelsea. Manchester City won the cup after the game ended in a draw. He also kept a clean sheet in the 2019 FA Cup final. City won that game 6–0 against Watford, completing a treble of domestic trophies.
Ederson won the Premier League Golden Glove award in the 2019–20 season. He had 16 clean sheets. He won the award again the next year, in 2020–21. On September 1, 2021, he signed a new contract with Manchester City until 2026. He won the Golden Glove for a third time in a row in 2021–22. He shared the award with Alisson Becker of Liverpool, as both had 20 clean sheets.
On January 15, 2024, Ederson received the FIFA Best Men's Goalkeeper award for 2023. This was for his excellent performance in the 2022–23 season. He had 11 clean sheets in the Premier League and 22 saves in the Champions League. He was also a key part of the City team that won the treble in 2023. In May 2024, he suffered a fractured eye socket. This injury kept him out of the last Premier League game and the 2024 FA Cup final.
Playing for Brazil
Ederson was first called up to Brazil's team for the Copa América Centenario in 2016. However, he had to withdraw due to an injury. He made his first appearance for the national team on October 10, 2017. It was a 3–0 win over Chile in a World Cup qualifier. In May 2018, he was chosen for Brazil's 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia. Ederson was also part of Brazil's squad for the 2019 Copa América.
In June 2021, he played in his first major tournament for Brazil. He started and kept a clean sheet in a 4–0 group stage win against Peru at the 2021 Copa América. In the quarter-finals against Chile, he started instead of Alisson Becker. Brazil won that match 1–0, and also won the semi-finals against Peru. On July 10, he started in the final against rivals Argentina. Brazil lost that game 1–0.
Ederson was named in the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He played one game in the tournament. It was a 1–0 loss to Cameroon in the final group game. Brazil had already qualified for the next round. He was initially called up for the 2024 Copa América. However, he was replaced before the tournament. This was because he could not recover from his fractured eye socket injury.
How Ederson Plays
Ederson is known as an agile and strong goalkeeper. He has good reflexes and is excellent at stopping shots. However, he is most famous for his ability to play with the ball at his feet. He is very confident and skilled when passing the ball. He can keep possession and quickly start attacks from the back. He uses his hands or either foot to pass, even when under pressure. He can also launch long kicks to start an attack.
Even though he is naturally left-footed, he can use both feet well. In 2018, former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given called Ederson "the best goalkeeper in the world with his feet." His wide range of passing has even led some to call him a playmaker.
Ederson is also very fast when he rushes out of his goal. He often plays as a sweeper-keeper. This means he comes out of his penalty area to clear the ball. From a young age, he was seen as a very promising player. He is known for making good decisions and being consistent. He is also calm under pressure and good at organizing his defense. Many people in football consider him one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and in the world.
Personal Life
Ederson became a Portuguese citizen in 2016. He has many tattoos on his body. These include a rose and a skull on his neck. He also has angel wings on his back. On his leg, he has a tattoo of the Portuguese League trophy. He won this trophy with Benfica in 2016 and 2017. He also has a tattoo that says 'I Belong to Jesus', showing his Christian faith.
