On June 27, 2015, Ederson returned to Benfica, who were the Portuguese champions. In July, he officially signed a five-year contract. The deal was worth €500,000. His release clause was set at €45 million. Rio Ave kept 50% of his future transfer fees.

In the 2015–16 season, Ederson was the second-choice goalkeeper. The main goalkeeper was Júlio César. Ederson played some games for the reserve team, Benfica B. He also played in the Taça da Liga for the main team.

He first played in the Primeira Liga on March 5, 2016. This was against local rivals Sporting CP. He replaced Júlio César, who was injured. Benfica won the game 1–0 and took first place in the league. He then helped Benfica win 11 more games. This led to their 35th league title, their third in a row.

On June 1, 2017, Benfica announced that Ederson had joined Premier League club Manchester City. The transfer fee was £35 million (€40 million). At that time, this made him the second most expensive goalkeeper ever. Only Gianluigi Buffon had a higher transfer fee in euros. Later, Alisson Becker and Kepa Arrizabalaga had higher fees. Ederson's transfer fee was also the largest amount a club had ever paid for a Benfica player at that time.

Ederson immediately became the first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester City. He replaced Claudio Bravo. His first game for the club was on August 12, 2017. It was a 2–0 away win against Brighton & Hove Albion. He did not let any goals in. On September 9, he played against Liverpool. Ederson was kicked in the face by Sadio Mané. He had to leave the game after eight minutes of treatment. Ederson needed eight stitches. Mané was sent off and banned for three games.

Ederson played his next game the following week. This was in the Champions League against Feyenoord. He wore protective headgear. Ederson believed that Mané's collision was an accident. He accepted an apology from the Liverpool player.

On August 19, 2018, Ederson made history. He became the first Manchester City goalkeeper to get an assist in the Premier League. His goal-kick led to a goal by Sergio Agüero. This happened in a 6–1 win over Huddersfield Town. In the 2019 EFL Cup final, he saved a penalty from Jorginho. Manchester City won the penalty shootout against Chelsea. He also kept a clean sheet in a 6–0 win over Watford. This was in the 2019 FA Cup final. His team won all three major domestic trophies that season.

Ederson won the Premier League Golden Glove award in the 2019–20 season. This award is for the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets (16). He won it after a 5–0 home win against Norwich City. He won the award again a year later. He also won the Golden Glove for the third time in a row in 2021–22. He shared the award with his countryman Alisson Becker of Liverpool. On September 1, 2021, he signed a new contract until 2026.

On January 15, 2024, Ederson won the FIFA Best Men's Goalkeeper award for 2023. This was because he had the most clean sheets (11) in the 2022–23 Premier League season. He also made the most saves (22) in the UEFA Champions League. He was part of the City team that won the treble in 2023. Four months later, he got a fractured eye socket. This happened after a collision with Cristian Romero. Because of this, he missed the last Premier League game and the 2024 FA Cup final.

Ederson was chosen for Brazil's team for the Copa América Centenario. However, he had to leave the team due to an injury. He first played for the national team on October 10, 2017. This was in a 3–0 win over Chile. It was a 2018 World Cup qualifier. In May 2018, he was named in Tite's 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia. In the quarter-finals against Chile, he played instead of Alisson Becker. Brazil won that match 1–0. They also won the semi-finals against Peru. On July 10, he started in the final. Brazil lost 1–0 to their rivals Argentina.

Ederson was part of the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He played one game for the team. This was a 1–0 loss to Cameroon in the final group game. Brazil had already made it to the next round. He was initially called up for the 2024 Copa América. However, he was replaced by Rafael. This was because he could not recover from his fractured eye socket.

Style of play

Ederson is known as an agile and strong goalkeeper. He has good reflexes and is great at stopping shots. But he is most famous for how well he uses his feet. He is very skilled with the ball. His control and confidence allow him to keep possession. He can quickly pass the ball out from the back with his hands or either foot. He can even start attacks with long kicks.

Even though he is naturally left-footed, he can use both feet well. In 2018, former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given said Ederson was "the best goalkeeper in the world with his feet." His amazing passing range has even led some to call him a playmaker.

Ederson is also very fast when he rushes out of his goal. He often plays as a sweeper-keeper. When he was younger, people saw him as a very promising player. He was known for making good decisions and being consistent. He is also good at organizing his defense. Many people think he is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and in the world.

Personal life

Ederson became a Portuguese citizen in 2016. His body has many tattoos. These include a rose and a skull on his neck. He has angel wings on his back. He also has a tattoo of the Portuguese League trophy on his leg. He won this trophy with Benfica in 2016 and 2017. He even has a tattoo that says 'I Belong to Jesus'. This shows his Christian faith.
