Álisson Ramsés Becker (born 2 October 1992), known as Alisson Becker or just Alisson, is a Brazilian professional footballer. He plays as a goalkeeper for the English club Liverpool and the Brazil national team. Alisson is famous for his quick reflexes, amazing saves, and great positioning. Many people think he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and even one of the best ever!

Alisson started his football journey at Internacional's youth academy in 2002. He made his first team debut in 2013. During his four years with Internacional, he helped them win the Campeonato Gaúcho title every season. In July 2016, he moved to the Italian club Roma. He was named Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year in the 2017–18 season.

In July 2018, Liverpool signed Alisson for a large fee. This made him the most expensive goalkeeper of all time for a short period. At Liverpool, Alisson has won many important trophies. These include the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, UEFA Champions League, and FIFA Club World Cup. In 2019, he received two big awards: The Best FIFA Goalkeeper and the first-ever Yashin Trophy. He has also been chosen twice for the FIFA FIFPRO Men's World 11, which is a team of the best players in the world.

Alisson played for Brazil's youth teams before joining the senior national team in 2015. He represented Brazil in the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and 2022. He also played in the Copa América in 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024. Brazil won the 2019 tournament, and Alisson was named its best goalkeeper.

Alisson's Club Career

Starting at Internacional

Internacional-2015 (2)

Alisson was born in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil. He joined Internacional's football academy when he was ten years old in 2002. He played for their youth teams and then for the under-23 side. His first senior game was on 17 February 2013, in a 1–1 draw against Cruzeiro-RS. This was in the Campeonato Gaúcho championship.

He made his Série A debut on 25 August 2013. This was in a 3–3 home draw against Goiás. In his first season, he played six games. The next year, he competed with the famous Brazilian goalkeeper Dida. Alisson became a regular starter in October 2014. He played 11 league games that year.

In 2015, he was the main goalkeeper, playing 57 games in all competitions. On 4 February 2016, Alisson agreed to join the Italian club Roma. He signed a five-year deal. His last game for Internacional was on 15 May 2016. He kept a clean sheet in a 0–0 draw against Chapecoense. During his four years with Internacional, Alisson played over 100 games. He also won the Campeonato Gaúcho title every season.

Playing for Roma

Alisson officially moved to the Italian club Roma in July 2016. He played his first game for Roma on 17 August 2016. This was a 1–1 UEFA Champions League draw with Porto. For most of that season, he was the backup goalkeeper to Wojciech Szczęsny. He played 15 games in total but did not play in any league matches.

When Szczęsny left for Juventus, Alisson became the main goalkeeper. He later said he would have thought about leaving Roma if he hadn't been promised more playing time. Alisson made his Serie A debut on the first weekend of the 2017–18 Serie A season. Roma won that game 1–0 against Atalanta.

He played in the "Derby della Capitale" on 18 November, a 2–1 win against rivals Lazio. Alisson was praised for his great performances in the 2017–18 Champions League. He helped Roma reach the semi-finals. Roma did not let in a single goal at their home stadium, Stadio Olimpico, in the Champions League until the semi-final against Liverpool. Roma won that game 4–2 but lost 7–6 overall. Alisson kept 22 clean sheets in the 2017–18 season. This included 17 in the league and 5 in the Champions League.

Joining Liverpool

Winning the Champions League in 2019

On 19 July 2018, Liverpool announced they had signed Alisson. The transfer fee was £66.8 million (€72.5 million). This made him the most expensive goalkeeper ever at the time. However, this record was broken just four weeks later. On 10 August, Liverpool confirmed he would wear the number 13 shirt for the 2018–19 season.

Alisson played his first game for Liverpool on 12 August. He kept a clean sheet in a 4–0 win over West Ham United. He was praised for his performances in wins against Crystal Palace and Brighton. He kept three clean sheets in a row. In August, Alisson was second in the voting for Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season. With Alisson in goal, Liverpool went 20 league games without losing at the start of the season. This broke a club record. Alisson also made a very important save late in a Champions League group game against Napoli. Liverpool won 1–0 and moved to the next stage.

On 4 March 2019, he kept his 17th Premier League clean sheet of the season. This was the most by any goalkeeper in their first Premier League season since Pepe Reina in 2006. At the end of the season, Alisson had 21 clean sheets and won the Premier League Golden Glove award. In the Champions League knockout stages, Alisson was key as Liverpool reached their second final in a row. In the semi-final against Barcelona, he made many great saves. Liverpool won 4–0 at home, overturning a 3–0 loss from the first game. In the final on 1 June 2019, Alisson kept a clean sheet. Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 2–0, and Alisson made eight saves. This was his first trophy with the club.

After wearing number 13 in his first season, Alisson changed to the number 1 shirt for the 2019–20 season. He started in the 2019 FA Community Shield against Manchester City on 4 August. The game ended 1–1, and Manchester City won on penalties. On 9 August 2019, in the first game of the 2019–20 Premier League season against Norwich, Alisson got a calf injury. He had to leave the game after 38 minutes and was replaced by Adrián. He was expected to be out for a few weeks.

Because of this injury, he missed the 2019 UEFA Super Cup. Liverpool won this trophy on 14 August, beating Chelsea on penalties after a 2–2 draw. Alisson returned to the team on 20 October in a 1–1 draw with Manchester United. On 30 November, in a 2–1 win over Brighton, he was sent off for handling the ball outside his area. On 21 December, Alisson kept a clean sheet against Flamengo in the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup final. Liverpool won the trophy for the first time. This allowed Manchester City's İlkay Gündoğan and Raheem Sterling to score, and Liverpool lost 4–1.

On 16 May 2021, Alisson scored a dramatic late goal in a 2–1 win against West Bromwich Albion. Liverpool needed to win to get into the top four. The score was 1–1, and Alisson went up for a corner kick in the 95th minute. The corner, taken by Trent Alexander-Arnold, found Alisson, who scored with a header! Liverpool lost 1–0 to Real Madrid in the final. Liverpool almost won a historic four trophies that season. They finished second in the Premier League and Champions League. However, they won both the EFL Cup and the FA Cup.

Alisson's Playing Style

Alisson is highly praised for his ability to make important saves. He is especially good in one-on-one situations against attackers. People also admire his positioning, how he distributes the ball, and his consistent performances. Some experts even call him the best goalkeeper in the world.

Alisson looks up to former Barcelona goalkeeper Víctor Valdés for his skill in playing the ball out from the back. He also admires Manuel Neuer for his "sweeper-keeper" style. This means he often comes out of his goal to clear the ball or challenge opponents. Alisson is known for his speed and good timing when he rushes off his line. He can clear the ball with his feet outside the penalty area. He is also quick to get down and collect or block shots inside the box.

Because he is so good with the ball at his feet, he can start attacks quickly. He can also pick out midfielders or attackers with his long goal kicks. His calm nature and skill with the ball allow his teams to play with a high defensive line. This means defenders play closer to the halfway line.

Even though Alisson is tall and strong, he is also very agile and athletic. He has quick reflexes and can make amazing, instinctive saves when needed. However, he is mostly known for his efficient style of goalkeeping. This comes from his ability to anticipate plays, his consistency, and his intelligence. He reads the game well, covers the goal effectively, and stops shots without needing to make flashy dives all the time. He is also good at handling the ball and is effective at catching high balls. This helps him control his penalty area well. Alisson's footwork when facing opponents is also highly regarded.

Some sports experts believe Alisson is the most skilled goalkeeper in the Premier League. They think he is arguably the best in the world when facing an opponent alone. His playing style has been compared to other Brazilian goalkeepers like Júlio César and Cláudio Taffarel. He has even been nicknamed "The Messi of goalkeepers."

Alisson's Personal Life

Alisson's older brother, Muriel, is also a goalkeeper. He also came through Internacional's academy. Alisson's family on his father's side is of German descent. His father and grandmother speak German fluently. When he was at Roma, Alisson was nicknamed "The German." He also has a German passport. Besides his native Portuguese, Alisson also speaks Italian, Spanish, and English. In May 2019, he became a goodwill ambassador for the World Health Organization (WHO).

In 2015, Alisson married Natália Loewe, who is a doctor from Brazil. They have a daughter named Helena, born in April 2017. Their first son, Matteo, was born in June 2019. Their second son was born in May 2021. Alisson and Natália have supported the WHO in promoting mental health care. On 24 February 2021, Alisson's father, José Agostinho, sadly drowned in a lake near his holiday home. Local officials said there was no foul play involved.

Alisson is a very religious Pentecostal Christian. He has performed baptisms in his swimming pool for teammates like Roberto Firmino and the wife of Fenerbahçe player Fred. His teammate Virgil van Dijk nicknamed him "The Holy Goalie" because of his faith. After winning the Champions League, he lifted the trophy wearing a T-shirt that said "† = ❤".

On 28 November 2024, it was reported that Alisson extended his contract with his agency, Neis World Sports. This means they will continue to be his agents.
