The El Ranco Province (which means Provincia del Ranco in Spanish) is one of two provinces in the Los Ríos area of Chile. A province is like a large county or district. The main city and capital of El Ranco is La Unión.
The El Ranco province was created in 2007. This happened when the Los Ríos region was formed. At first, it was just called Ranco province. But in 2008, its name was changed to El Ranco.

Geography of El Ranco
El Ranco province is located in the southern part of the Los Ríos region. It covers a large area of about 8,232 square kilometers (3,178 square miles). The capital city, La Unión, is found in the western part of the province.
Borders and Neighbors
El Ranco shares its borders with different places:
- To the north, it meets the Valdivia province.
- To the east, it borders Argentina.
- To the south, it is next to the Los Lagos region.
- To the west, it touches the Pacific Ocean.
Rivers and Lakes
The most important river in the province is the Bueno river. This river starts at the Ranco lake and flows all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It is about 130 kilometers (81 miles) long.
Weather and Climate
The area around Lago Ranco gets a lot of rain. The average rainfall for the year is about 1,976 millimeters (77.8 inches). The wettest month is usually May, with about 273 millimeters (10.7 inches) of rain. January is the driest month, with only about 79 millimeters (3.1 inches) of rain on average.
Population in El Ranco
In 2002, which was when the last national census was taken, there were 97,153 people living in El Ranco province. This means there were about 11.8 people living in each square kilometer.
More than half of the people, about 51,273, lived in cities or towns. This was about 53% of the total population. The biggest city in the province is its capital, La Unión. In 2002, about 25,615 people lived there.
