Fall Guys (once called Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout) is a fun free-to-play platform battle royale game. It was made by a company called Mediatonic. In the game, up to 60 players control cute, jellybean-shaped characters. They compete in many different mini-games. These games can be obstacle courses or even tag. Players get eliminated round by round. The last player standing wins the crown!

The game is inspired by exciting TV game shows. Think of shows like Takeshi's Castle or Wipeout. It also takes ideas from playground games like tag.

Fall Guys first came out on August 4, 2020. It was available for Microsoft Windows computers and PlayStation 4 consoles. Devolver Digital was the first publisher. Later, Epic Games bought Mediatonic. Then, on June 21, 2022, Fall Guys became free to play! It also launched on more platforms. These included Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Now, players on different systems can play together. This is called cross-platform play. When the game became free, it added a battle pass system. This lets players earn cool outfits and items for their characters.

Critics gave Fall Guys good reviews. They liked its wild gameplay and bright look. The game was a big hit! It sold over 10 million copies. After becoming free, more than 50 million people started playing. Mediatonic often releases new updates. The current season has an underwater theme.

How to Play Fall Guys

Up to 60 players join a match. It's like a battle royale where everyone tries to be the last one left. Your character looks like a jellybean. You can move around a 3D course. You can also jump, grab, climb, and dive. These moves help you get through the games.

The goal is to pass each round. The game picks mini-games and their variations randomly. Some games make you race to a finish line. Others ask you to survive or play tag. Some even need teamwork! Obstacles appear everywhere to make things harder. If you are too slow, fall into pink slime, or fail a task, you are out!

In the final round, only a few players are left. They play a special mini-game made for fewer people. The winner is the last player standing or the first to finish. They get a crown!

Customizing Your Character

You can buy cool items for your character. These include outfits, nameplates, and emotes. You use an in-game currency called "Kudos." You earn Kudos by doing daily challenges. Winning a match gives you crowns. Before June 21, 2022, crowns were a special currency. Now, they just count towards your Crown Rank. Any crowns you had before the game went free were changed into Kudos.

Game Seasons and Events

Fall Guys gets new seasons every 2 to 6 months. Each season has a new theme and fresh content.

Season 2 let players choose different "shows." These were groups of mini-games.

Season 4 added "Crown Shards." You earned these by playing in Squad Mode. In Squad Mode, four players work together. Crown Shards automatically turn into crowns.

Season 5 brought limited-time events. Players had to complete challenges. They could win special costumes and items. These events often featured characters from other games. For example, there were events with Ratchet & Clank or Aloy.

Sweet Thieves was a new game mode in Season 6. One team (Thieves) is almost invisible. The other team (Guardians) tries to catch them. Thieves try to bring sweets to goals. Guardians try to stop them by grabbing them and putting them in a jail. A button can be pressed to open the jail every 30 seconds.

When the game became free, it started with Season 1: Free for All. This season added "Show Bucks." This is a special currency you can buy with real money. You can use Show Bucks to get full costumes or the paid Season Pass.

Season 1: Free for All also had "Bean Hill Zone." This was a special game round with Sega. It was a limited-time event. Later, in Season 3: Sunken Secrets, it became a regular part of the game.

New costumes are added often. Many are from other popular video games and media franchises. You might see outfits from Half-Life, Portal, Godzilla, Team Fortress 2, Sonic the Hedgehog, Doom, Among Us, and even Hatsune Miku!

How Fall Guys Was Made

The idea for Fall Guys started in January 2018. The team at Mediatonic was talking about another project. Lead designer Joe Walsh said it reminded him of game shows like Takeshi's Castle. He used this idea to create a plan for Fall Guys.

The game was first called Fools' Gauntlet. Later, it was called "Stumble Chums." Joe Walsh's idea was for 100 players to compete in a battle royale with physical challenges. Creative director Jeff Tanton wasn't sure at first. But he quickly saw how fun the game could be. He shared Walsh's idea with Mediatonic's founders.

Tanton and Walsh made a presentation. Artist Dan Hoang drew colorful, bean-shaped characters. They were racing on an obstacle course in the sky. Tanton said Dan's drawings helped focus the game on the characters. With the plan ready, Tanton showed it to 10 different publishers. This was at a big event called the 2018 Game Developers Conference. Six months later, Devolver Digital agreed to publish the game. Then, development began!

Fall Guys started with a small team. It grew to 30 people during development. At first, making new mini-games was slow. The team worried they wouldn't have enough content. A big change happened when they made some "pillars" or main rules. These rules helped them decide which ideas to keep. For example, a mini-game had to be "50-50 chaos and skill." Also, a level had to be "different every time."

Mediatonic wanted to make the game feel like a game show. They also wanted it to be different from shooting battle royale games. So, they focused on having many different types of gameplay. They wanted to recreate the feeling of being on a game show. To keep the "spirit of playground games," they made a rule. Game modes had to be explained in just three words.

The game changed a lot over time. The number of players was lowered from 100 to 60. This was because too many players made the game hard to understand. Mediatonic found that players thought there were more people than there actually were.

The game show It's a Knockout inspired the characters. In that show, people wore big, silly costumes. This led to the idea that the Fall Guys characters should look "badly designed for the task." The way characters fall over is on purpose. It's funny! It also makes them different from super athletic characters. Joe Walsh said it was important to balance funny falls with good game performance. If the characters didn't fall in a silly way, it wouldn't be as funny. The character designs were also inspired by vinyl toys.

Mediatonic started working on Season 2 before the game even came out.

Game Release and Updates

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout was first announced in June 2019 at E3. It came out on August 4, 2020, for PlayStation 4 and Windows. Many updates followed for the first season. On October 8, 2020, the medieval-themed second season was released. The game's success led to more people being hired to work on it.

In August 2020, a Chinese company called Bilibili said it would make a mobile version of Fall Guys. This version would be for Android and iOS phones, but only in China.

In February 2021, Fall Guys was announced for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. It was planned for mid-2021. But in April 2021, these versions were delayed to 2022. The reason was to focus on making sure all versions of the game could play together.

In March 2021, Epic Games bought Mediatonic and its parent company. Epic Games then said they would focus on adding cross-platform support for Fall Guys. They would use resources from games like Fortnite to help with this.

On November 18, 2021, Mediatonic announced that players would need Epic Games Accounts for Season 6. This allowed players on PS4 and Steam to keep their progress across both systems. Steam players could also have custom names. On February 22, 2022, an update added Lobbies and Friends lists. This uses the Epic Overlay system, like in Fortnite, to invite friends on any platform.

On March 15, 2022, Mediatonic said PlayStation players would need to download a new game launcher. This was needed to keep playing the game on PlayStation. The old launcher stopped working on May 9, 2022. Both launchers were the same, but the new one was published by Epic Games. Players who downloaded the new launcher got a free Pink Shark costume.

Mediatonic and Epic Games made Fall Guys free-to-play on June 21, 2022. This was when it launched on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. A special PlayStation 5 version also came out. It had better graphics and DualSense controller effects. The game's name was also changed to just Fall Guys.

To support the free-to-play model, the game added a new season pass system. It has free rewards and premium rewards. You can buy the premium pass with real money. For Windows, the game was removed from the Steam store. It became available on the Epic Games Store. However, the Steam version still gets updates. The free-to-play versions of Fall Guys also added full cross-platform play support. Players who bought Fall Guys before it became free got a "Legacy Pack." This pack included special outfits and the Season 1: Free for All premium season pass for free.

In July 2022, a bug was found. It made players accidentally buy items from the in-game store instead of just looking at them. Mediatonic first said it wasn't a problem. But after many complaints, they agreed it was a bug. On November 1, 2022, an update was released. Now, you have to hold a button to buy items. This is like how it works in Fortnite.

In November 2022, Mediatonic announced a new feature called "Vaulting." Some game rounds will be temporarily removed. This helps the game run better on all platforms.
