The English Football League Two, often called League Two, is a professional football league in England. It's the third and lowest division of the English Football League (EFL). Overall, it's the fourth-highest football league in the English football system. For sponsorship, it's known as Sky Bet League Two.
This league started in the 2004–05 season. Before that, it was known as the Football League Third Division. Even earlier, it was the Football League Fourth Division before the Premier League began in 1992.
As of the 2024–25 season, Newport County has been in this division the longest. They were promoted in the 2012–13 season. Two former Premier League clubs are currently in League Two: Bradford City and Swindon Town.
The team that won the league most recently is Stockport County.

How League Two Works
There are 24 football clubs in League Two. Each club plays every other club twice during the season. This means they play one game at their home stadium and one game away. In total, each team plays 46 matches in a season.
Points System
Teams earn points for their matches:
- Three points for a win.
- One point for a draw (a tie).
- No points for a loss.
These points are used to create the league table. The team with the most points is at the top.
Promotion to League One
At the end of each season, the top three teams in League Two automatically get promoted. This means they move up to play in EFL League One, which is a higher division.
Teams that finish from fourth to seventh place then play in a special mini-tournament called the play-offs. The winner of these play-offs also gets promoted to League One. These four promoted teams are replaced by the four teams that finish at the bottom of League One.
Relegation to the National League
The two teams that finish at the very bottom of League Two are relegated. This means they move down to the National League, which is a lower division.
These two teams are replaced by the team that finishes first in the National League. The other spot is filled by the winner of the National League play-offs (teams finishing second through seventh).
Deciding Final Positions
If teams have the same number of points, their final position is decided by:
- Goal difference: This is the number of goals a team has scored minus the number of goals they have let in.
- Goals scored: The total number of goals a team has scored.
- Head-to-head results: If it's still a tie, they look at the results of games played between those specific teams.
- Play-off matches: If everything else is still tied, they might play extra matches.
Wage Cap
League Two has a rule called a wage cap. This limits how much money clubs can spend on players' wages. It's set at 55% of the club's total income. This helps keep the league fair and financially stable.
