Frinton-on-Sea is a small seaside town in Essex, England. It is part of the Tendring area. In 2018, about 4,837 people lived there. Frinton is known as a quiet and charming place by the sea.

History of Frinton-on-Sea

The name 'Frinton' was first written down in a very old book called the Domesday Book in 1086. It was spelled Frientuna back then. The name might mean 'fenced-in' or 'enclosed town'.

Early Development of Frinton

Until the late Victorian times (around the 1890s), Frinton-on-Sea was mostly just a church, a few farms, and some small houses. A man named Peter Bruff first started to develop the town.

Later, a rich businessman named Richard Powell Cooper bought out Bruff's plans. Powell Cooper had already built the town's golf course. He decided not to build a pier, which Bruff had planned. He also made strict rules about how good the new houses had to be. He even said that no boarding houses or pubs could be built in the town.

Protecting the Coastline

In 1903, a special law called the Sea Defence Act was passed. This law helped start a project to make the cliffs stronger. The Greensward, which is a wide grassy area between the promenade and the sea, was created to help keep the land stable.

Frinton's Golden Age

In the early 1900s, Frinton-on-Sea became a popular place for important and wealthy people to visit. A street called Connaught Avenue was opened by the wife of the Duke of Connaught. This street was so fancy that people called it East Anglia's Bond Street, like the famous shopping street in London.

Other fun places included a lido (an outdoor swimming pool), which even had palm trees. There were also nice hotels along the seafront and a tennis tournament for amateur players. Famous people like the Prince of Wales (who later became King Edward VII) often visited the golf club. Even Winston Churchill, who would later become Prime Minister, rented a house there.

World War II and Modern Times

During World War II, Frinton was the last place in England to be attacked by the Luftwaffe (the German air force) in 1944.

For a long time, Frinton had a reputation for being a very traditional and quiet town. Until recently, there were no pubs in the town itself. However, there were bars in the seafront hotels and at the golf and War Memorial clubs. The very first pub, called the Lock and Barrel, finally opened in 2000.

Local Government

Frinton has its own area for local elections, called an electoral ward. In 2011, about 4,002 people lived in this ward.

Geography of Frinton-on-Sea

Frinton has three main ways to enter by road. One is an unofficial road from Walton-on-the-Naze to the north. Another is a regular residential road. The third is a level crossing next to the railway station. This crossing is watched by cameras and replaced an older one in 2009.

Frinton used to be quite separate from nearby towns. But now, new housing areas connect it to Walton-on-the-Naze, Kirby Cross, and Kirby-Le-Soken.

Frinton's Beach and Coastline

The town has a beautiful beach that is a mix of sand and stone. It is cleaned every day and is more than a mile (1,600 meters) long. During the busy season, there are wardens to help keep everyone safe. A special part of the sea is marked off for swimming, sailing, and windsurfing.

Along the shore, there is a promenade lined with hundreds of beach huts. These are small, colorful sheds that people rent for the day to enjoy the beach. Inland from the promenade is the long greensward, a grassy area that stretches from Walton-on-Naze to the golf club. It's a popular spot for people of all ages to relax.

About six miles offshore, you can see the Gunfleet Lighthouse. It was built in 1850 but was no longer used after 1921.

Places of Worship

Frinton has several churches for different faiths. There are two Anglican churches. St Mary the Virgin church has parts that are very old, built in the Norman style. The church of St Mary Magdalene was built in 1928 because St Mary the Virgin was too small for all the people who wanted to worship there.

Across the road from St Mary Magdalene is the Evangelical Gospel Chapel. Frinton's Catholic church, called the Church of the Sacred Heart and St Francis, was built in 1904. It was first a public hall before becoming a church in the 1920s. There is also a Methodist church and a Free church in Frinton.
