History of Georgetown University
How Georgetown Started

In 1634, Jesuit settlers from England started the Province of Maryland. For a long time, Catholic schools had to operate secretly. After the American Revolutionary War, there was a chance to create a permanent Catholic school in the United States.
Pope Pius VI chose John Carroll to lead the Catholic Church in the U.S. In 1783, Carroll began planning a new university. On January 23, 1789, he bought the land in Georgetown. The first student, William Gaston, enrolled on November 22, 1791. Classes officially began on January 2, 1792.
The 1800s
In its early years, Georgetown College faced money problems. The Society of Jesus helped the school in 1805. To raise money, the Maryland Jesuits ended their slaveholding in 1838. They sold about 272 enslaved people to plantations in Louisiana.
President James Madison signed a law on March 1, 1815. This law gave Georgetown the power to grant degrees. The first bachelor's degrees were given out two years later.
In 1844, the school received a special charter. This gave it more legal rights. The Medical School was started in 1851 to meet the demand for local Catholic students.
The American Civil War greatly affected Georgetown. Many students and alumni joined the armies. The Union Army even used university buildings to protect Washington, D.C. Enrollment dropped after the war. In 1876, the school's rowing team chose blue and gray as its colors. These colors represented the Union and Confederate uniforms. They showed that students with different loyalties could exist peacefully.
Enrollment grew again in the late 1800s. This was during the time of Patrick Francis Healy, who was president from 1873 to 1881. Healy was the first person of African descent to lead a mostly white American university. He improved the courses, made the medical and law programs longer, and started the Alumni Association. He also oversaw the building of Healy Hall, which is named after him. Because of his work, Healy is known as the school's "second founder."
The 1900s
In 1901, the School of Medicine added a dental school. The undergraduate School of Nursing opened in 1903.
The Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) was founded in 1919. It prepared students for careers in diplomacy and international business. The School of Business became separate from the SFS in 1957. It was later renamed the McDonough School of Business.
Georgetown also started admitting more women. The School of Nursing always had female students. By 1952, most university classes were open to women. The College of Arts and Sciences welcomed its first female students in 1969. This made Georgetown fully coeducational, meaning both men and women could attend.

In 1975, Georgetown started the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies. It received money from different governments and companies. Georgetown celebrated its 200th birthday in 1989.
The 2000s
In 2003, Georgetown finished a fundraising campaign. It raised over $1 billion for student aid and new projects.
In 2005, Georgetown opened a campus of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service in Qatar. It also started working with Fudan University in China.
John J. DeGioia became Georgetown's first president who was not a Jesuit in 2001. He has continued to improve the university's finances. He also works to promote understanding between different cultures and religions.
Jesuit Tradition
Georgetown University was founded by former Jesuits. It follows the traditions of Ignatius of Loyola, who started the Jesuit order. Many Jesuits live and work on campus as professors or administrators. Georgetown celebrates "Jesuit Heritage Week" every year.
Catholic spaces on campus, like Dahlgren Chapel, are part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.
