Park History: A Look Back

Hyner Run State Park has an interesting past. It was once home to a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp. The CCC was a program during the Great Depression. It gave jobs to young men who didn't have work.

The Civilian Conservation Corps at Hyner Run

Camp S-75-PA was one of many CCC camps in Pennsylvania. Young men from CCC Company 310 worked hard here. They cleared forests to help prevent forest fires. They also built roads and facilities for state parks. The CCC members even constructed bridges and planted trees. They also helped clean up streams.

The camp was built in 1933. It was in a very remote area. At first, there was no electricity. Later, a power plant was added. A large 4,000 US gallon (15,000 L) reservoir was also built for water. In 1936, a big flood from the West Branch Susquehanna River damaged much of the camp. But you can still find some traces of it today.

Opening the Park to Visitors

Hyner Run State Park officially opened to the public in 1958. When it first opened, it had a swimming pool and a bathhouse. There was also a snack area, picnic spots, and restrooms. The camping area was added later, opening in 1975.
