Jeffrey Patrick Hendrick (born 31 January 1992) is an Irish professional footballer. He plays as a midfielder and is currently a free agent. He also plays for the Republic of Ireland national team.
Jeff grew up playing for St. Kevin's Boys in his hometown of Dublin. He joined Derby County's youth academy in 2008. He made his first professional appearance in April 2011. Jeff quickly became a regular player for Derby. He played in the 2014 Championship play-off final, where Derby lost 1–0 to Queens Park Rangers. Over six years, he played 214 games and scored 26 goals for Derby.
In August 2016, Jeff joined Burnley, a team that had just been promoted to the Premier League. He helped Burnley finish seventh in the 2017–18 season. This meant they qualified for the Europa League, which was Burnley's first time in a European competition in 51 years! Jeff left Burnley in June 2020 after playing 139 games and scoring 10 goals. He then joined Newcastle United in August 2020. He left Newcastle in 2024 after playing 27 times. During his time at Newcastle, he also played on loan for Queens Park Rangers, Reading, and Sheffield Wednesday.
Jeff has played for Ireland at every youth level. He made his debut for the senior national team in February 2013. He has played 79 games for Ireland and represented them at Euro 2016.

Club Career Highlights
Starting at Derby County
Youth and Early Days
Jeff Hendrick joined Derby County as a young player in 2008. He came from St Kevin's Boys in Dublin. He played regularly for Derby's youth teams. By 2009–10, he was playing for the reserve team. The reserve team won the 2009–10 Central League Central Section title.
In May 2010, Jeff was a substitute for the first team. He signed his first professional contract in July 2010. He signed alongside other young players.
During the 2010–11 season, Jeff played a bigger role for Derby's reserve team. He started 17 games and scored 9 goals. This included three goals in one game (a hat-trick) and two goals in another (a brace). His good play earned him a contract extension until 2012.
Becoming a First Team Player
In 2011, Derby manager Nigel Clough wanted Jeff to play more for the first team. Jeff was excited to keep improving. He made his first team debut on 23 April 2011. He came on as a substitute against Burnley.
For the 2011–12 season, Jeff became a regular starter. He scored his first professional goal against Nottingham Forest. This was a winning goal in a 2–1 victory. His great performance earned him a spot in the Championship Team of the Week. He scored again in the next game, a 3–0 win against Millwall.
Jeff signed a new contract in January 2012, keeping him at Derby until 2015. He won the club's Sammy Crooks Young Player of the Year award for his great season.
Key Player and Play-off Dreams
Jeff started the 2012–13 season in the starting team. He worked hard to get back his best form. He scored his second goal of the season in a 2–0 win against Bristol City.
In 2013, Jeff started the year well, scoring three goals in three games. One of his goals was named Derby's Goal of the Season. Former player Kevin Kilbane said Jeff could play in the Premier League. Jeff finished as runner-up for Derby County Player of the Season.
For the 2013–14 season, Jeff scored four league goals. He helped Derby reach the play-offs. In the semi-final, he scored in a 4–1 win against Brighton. On 24 May, he played in the play-off final. Derby lost 1–0 to Queens Park Rangers and missed out on promotion.
In June 2014, Jeff signed a new four-year contract. He scored his first goal of the 2014–15 season in the first game against Rotherham United. He scored nine goals in 47 games that season, his best goalscoring year yet.
Jeff scored his first goal of the 2015–16 season in December 2015. Derby reached the play-offs again but lost to Hull City.
Time at Burnley
Premier League and European Football
On 31 August 2016, Jeff joined Burnley for a club record fee. He signed a three-year deal. He made his debut on 10 September as a substitute. His first start was on 17 September. Nine days later, Jeff scored his first goal for Burnley with a header.
He scored his second goal for Burnley on 10 December 2016. It was a fantastic 25-yard shot. This goal was nominated for Goal of the Month and won Burnley's Goal of the Season award. In February 2017, he was sent off against Watford.
Jeff scored his first goal of the 2017–18 season against Everton. Burnley won 1–0. He scored again against Newcastle United. Burnley finished seventh in the Premier League. This meant they qualified for the Europa League.
Jeff made his Europa League debut on 26 July 2018 against Aberdeen. Burnley were knocked out by Olympiacos. Jeff played in all six of Burnley's Europa League games.
Final Years with Burnley
His first goal of the 2018–19 season came against Fulham. In December 2018, Jeff signed a one-year contract extension. His manager, Sean Dyche, praised him for playing well in many different positions.
On 22 April 2019, Jeff scored a great goal against Chelsea. This draw helped Burnley stay safe in the Premier League. This goal was Burnley's 1,000th goal conceded in the Premier League. It also won him his second Goal of the Season award for the club.
On 14 September 2019, Jeff scored in his 100th Premier League game for Burnley. He scored a late goal to draw 1–1 with Brighton. Jeff left Burnley in June 2020 when his contract ended.
Moving to Newcastle United
Newcastle and Loan Spells
After leaving Burnley, Jeff joined Newcastle United on 24 August 2020. He signed a four-year deal. He said Newcastle was 'a massive club'. Manager Steve Bruce welcomed him, saying he was an experienced player who could play anywhere in midfield.
He made his Newcastle debut in a friendly game. Two weeks later, Jeff scored and assisted a goal in his first competitive game for Newcastle. This was a 2–0 win against West Ham United. He scored his second goal in December against Leeds United. In February 2021, Jeff was sent off against Southampton.
After this, Jeff played less often for Newcastle. He ended the season with 23 games and two goals. He scored his first goal of the 2021–22 season in October 2021.
On his 30th birthday, 31 January 2022, Jeff joined Queens Park Rangers on loan. He made his QPR debut in an FA Cup game. His loan spell at QPR was not very successful. He played 11 games but did not score.
Loans to Reading and Sheffield Wednesday
On 12 July 2022, Reading signed Jeff on a season-long loan. He scored in his first friendly game for Reading. He made his competitive debut on 30 July 2022.
Jeff played his 400th club game in September 2022. He scored his first competitive goal for Reading in October. In January 2023, he scored two goals in one game against his old club, Queens Park Rangers. This was his first time scoring two goals in a game since 2015.
Reading was relegated to League One at the end of the season. In May 2023, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said Jeff would be leaving the club.
On 1 September 2023, Jeff signed for Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan. He made his debut on 16 September. His first goal came on 29 November, a late goal against Leicester City that helped his team draw 1–1.
Jeff then got a knee injury and missed many games. He only played two more times for Sheffield Wednesday. He returned to Newcastle at the end of the season. On 29 May 2024, Newcastle announced that Jeff would leave the club.
International Career
Playing for Ireland's Youth Teams
Jeff was born in Dublin. He has played for Ireland at many youth levels. This includes under-15, under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19, and under-21 teams. He was nominated for the Republic of Ireland under-17 Player of the Year award in 2010.
He played a big part in the U19 team's success in 2011. He scored the only goal in a 1–0 win against Poland U19s. In July 2011, Jeff was part of the squad for the European Under-19 Championships. He started all four games as Ireland reached the semi-finals.
After this tournament, Jeff was called up to the Irish U21 squad. He made his debut in a 2–1 win against Austria U21s in August 2011.
Playing for the Senior National Team
In January 2013, Ireland's head coach Giovanni Trappatoni was watching Jeff. Jeff was called up to the senior squad for a friendly game against Poland on 6 February 2013. Jeff came on as a substitute and helped set up a goal for Ireland.
Jeff started his first game for Ireland against World and European Champions Spain in June 2013. He played a key role in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia in 2015. His run and skill helped set up the winning goal.
Jeff started all four of Ireland's games at Euro 2016. He played very well and helped Ireland reach the knockout stages. Ireland lost 2–1 to hosts France in the Round of 16.
Jeff scored his first goal for Ireland on 5 September 2016. He scored early in a 2–2 draw against Serbia in a World Cup qualifying game.
His second goal for Ireland came on 23 March 2019. He scored in a 1–0 win against Gibraltar in a Euro 2020 qualifying game. This goal ended Ireland's long wait for a goal. Jeff earned his 50th cap for Ireland on 5 September 2019.
On 15 November 2020, Jeff was sent off in his 60th game for Ireland. This happened in a 1–0 loss to Wales.
How He Plays
Jeff Hendrick is known for being a very hard-working player. He understands tactics well and is good at passing the ball. He can play in the middle of the field, on the right side, or as an attacking midfielder.
One of his strengths is winning the ball back after it's been kicked high. He helps keep the attack going forward. Jeff doesn't score many goals himself. His main job is to keep the ball moving high up the field to create chances for his teammates.
Personal Life
When he was growing up, Jeff played Gaelic football for Parnells. He is good friends with Dublin county team goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton. Jeff has twin brothers named Ross and Alan.
In 2020, Jeff started dating Scottish model Amanda Hendrick. They have a son together named Sonny. Jeff also has a close relationship with Amanda's daughter Misha.
