Starting at Derby County
Early Days and Youth Football
Jeff joined Derby County as a young player in 2008. He came from St. Kevin's Boys in Dublin. He played regularly for Derby's youth team. Then, he started playing for the reserve team in the 2009–10 season. The reserve team won the Central League Central Section title that year.
On May 2, 2010, Jeff was a substitute for the first team in a game against Cardiff City. A few weeks later, in July 2010, he signed his first professional contract with Derby.
Jeff played a bigger role for Derby's reserve team in the 2010–11 season. He started 17 games and scored 9 goals. This included three goals in one game (a hat-trick) and two goals in another (a brace). Because he played so well, he signed a new contract in January 2011.
Breaking into the First Team
Towards the end of the 2010–11 season, Derby's manager, Nigel Clough, wanted Jeff to play for the first team. Jeff made his first team debut on April 23, 2011. He came on as a substitute in a game against Burnley.
For the 2011–12 season, Jeff was a regular part of Derby's first team. He started playing in the third game of the season.
He scored his first professional goal in his fifth start. It was the winning goal in a 2–1 victory against Nottingham Forest. His great performance earned him a spot in the Championship Team of the Week. He scored again in the next game, a 3–0 win against Millwall. This was his first goal at Pride Park.
Jeff's good form led to talks about him joining Premier League teams. Derby offered him a new four-year contract, which he signed in December 2011. He missed some games due to an ankle injury but returned to play regularly. He scored his third goal of the season in March. At the end of the season, Jeff won the club's Young Player of the Year award.
