Larkana is a big city in the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is the 15th largest city in Pakistan based on its population. Larkana is famous for being close to Mohenjo-daro, an ancient site from the Indus Valley Civilization. The historic Indus River flows to the east and south of the city.

The city is part of the Larkana District. It was once known as "Chandka". Larkana is located on the south side of the Ghar canal. It is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Shikarpur. It is also about 36 kilometers (22 miles) northeast of Mehar. In 2017, Larkana had a population of 490,508 people. This makes it the fourth most populated city in the Sindh province. Only Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur have more people.

Geography of Larkana

Larkana is located in the northwest part of Sindh. It has its own administrative division. The city is also considered part of "Upper Sindh." Its exact location is at Latitude 24° 56' 00 N and Longitude 67° 11' 00 E.

Climate in Larkana

Larkana has a very hot desert climate. Summers are extremely hot, and winters are mild. The highest temperature ever recorded was 53.0°C (127.4°F) on May 26, 2010. The lowest temperature recorded was -4°C (25°F) in January 1929.

The city gets about 237.4 millimeters (9.35 inches) of rain each year. Most of this rain falls during the monsoon season, from July to September. In 2022, Larkana had its highest annual rainfall ever, with 988.7 millimeters (38.93 inches). Some areas even received over 1000 mm (39.37 inches) of rain that year. The lowest annual rainfall was 7.1 millimeters (0.28 inches) in 1938.

Famous Crops

Rice is the most important crop grown in Larkana. Other crops grown there include peas, grapes, mustard, and sunflowers.

Education in Larkana

Larkana has many schools, colleges, and universities for both boys and girls. These include both private and public institutions.

Schools, Colleges, and Training Centers

Some well-known local schools are Government Pilot School, Larkana, which was started in 1926, Girls High School, Public School Larkana, and Deeni Madersa High School. Government Degree College is also a notable institution.

For technical skills, there is the Polytechnic Institute and Teachers' Training College. An organization called DESSI International has a special training institute for girls. It teaches skills like beautician work, computer skills, dress making, and even Chinese language. These programs help young people get jobs.

Universities and Campuses

Larkana is home to several universities and university campuses:

  • Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University
  • Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) campus
  • Chandka Medical College

SZABIST opened its campus in Larkana in 2004. It offers different degree programs, including business and arts. Later, SZABIST also started a junior school and a school and college.

Chandka Medical College (CMC) was opened by former prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in 1973. It was the fourth public medical college in the Sindh province. CMC is recognized by the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council. It has also been upgraded to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University.

In 2009, Quaid-e-Awam University College of Engineering Science & Technology (QUCEST) was built near Larkana. It offers engineering degrees in areas like civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, and electrical engineering. In 2024, the University of Larkano was formed by combining Sindh University Campus, QUCEST, and Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Agricultural College.

Transportation

Larkana Railway Station is in the middle of the city. It connects Larkana to other parts of Sindh and Pakistan. The railway also helps transport farm products from Larkana to Karachi, the provincial capital. Moenjodaro Airport is near Mohen-jo-daro, about 28 kilometers (17 miles) south of Larkana.

Larkana is also connected to most major cities in Pakistan by bus. You can travel by bus to cities like Karachi, Islamabad, Hyderabad, and Quetta.

Sports in Larkana

Larkana is known as the birthplace of the Sindh Games. It also hosted the 12th Sindh Games in 2009. These games included many sports like football, gymnastics, hockey, and tennis. Traditional games such as kodi kodi and malakhara were also part of the event. Larkana was also home to a cricket team called Larkana Bulls.

The Larkana Tennis Association has the only tennis court in the city. It provides coaching for young boys who come from different cities to learn tennis.
