Liestal District is one of five districts in the canton of Basel-Country, Switzerland. Most people here speak German. The city of Liestal is the capital for both the district and the canton. It has a population of about 62,086 people (as of 30 June 2021).

Geography

Liestal district covers an area of about 85.83 square kilometers (33.14 sq mi). A big part of this land, about 33.9%, is used for farming. Forests cover an even larger area, about 43.2% of the district.

About 22% of the land is developed with buildings or roads. A small part, less than 1%, is made up of rivers or lakes. The rest is unproductive land.

Land Use Details

In the developed areas, about 3.2% are industrial buildings. Homes and other buildings make up 10.6%. Roads and other transport areas cover 5.7%. Parks and sports fields take up 1.3% of the district.

Most of the forested land is dense forest, about 41.4%. The rest includes orchards or small groups of trees. For farming, 13.9% is used for growing crops. Another 16.6% is used for pastures where animals graze.

People and Languages

Liestal district has a population of about 62,086 people (as of June 2021). About a quarter of the people living here are from other countries.

Most people in the district speak German, about 84%. The second most common language is Italian language, spoken by about 4.8% of the population. Turkish is the third most common, spoken by about 2%.

Where People Come From

In 2000, about 24.5% of the people living in Liestal district were also born there. Another 21.3% were born in the same canton (Basel-Country). About 27.1% were born elsewhere in Switzerland. Finally, 23.8% of the population were born outside of Switzerland.

Age Groups

The population includes different age groups. About 6.5% are children aged 0 to 6 years old. Teenagers, aged 7 to 19, make up about 14% of the population.

Adults aged 20 to 29 are about 12.9%. Those aged 30 to 39 are also about 12.9%. People between 40 and 49 make up 16.2%, and those between 50 and 64 are 20.7%. Older adults, aged 65 to 79, are 12.5%, and people over 80 are 4.3%.

Politics

In the 2007 national election, the most popular political party was the SVP. They received about 29.61% of the votes. The SP was next with 25.8% of the votes.

The FDP received 17.7% of the votes, and the Green Party got 14.53%. In this election, about 48.7% of eligible voters participated. This is called the voter turnout.

Religion

Based on the 2000 census, many people in Liestal district belong to a Christian church. About 26.2% are Roman Catholic. Another 44.7% belong to the Swiss Reformed Church.

Other Christian groups include Orthodox churches and the Christian Catholic Church. About 6.87% of the population are Muslim. A small number of people are Jewish, Buddhist, or Hindu.

About 12.55% of the people said they did not belong to any church. Some of these people might be agnostic (not sure about God) or atheist (do not believe in God).

Education

In Liestal district, many adults have completed higher levels of education. About 37.9% of the population have finished non-mandatory upper secondary education. This is like high school or vocational training.

Another 12.8% have completed even higher education. This includes going to a university or a specialized college (called a Fachhochschule). Of those with higher education, most are Swiss men, followed by Swiss women.
