List of New York City Designated Landmarks in Manhattan above 110th Street facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

New York City has many special places that tell stories about its past. To protect these important spots, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) was created in 1965. This group is part of the city government. It helps make sure these historic places are kept safe for everyone to enjoy.

Since it started, the LPC has named over a thousand landmarks. These landmarks fit into four main types:

  • Individual landmarks: These are single buildings or structures.
  • Interior landmarks: These protect the inside of a building, like a grand lobby.
  • Scenic landmarks: These are beautiful parks or natural areas.
  • Historic districts: These are whole neighborhoods with many old buildings that share a similar look or history.

The New York City borough of Manhattan has many of these special landmarks. The part of Manhattan north of 110th Street is called Upper Manhattan. It has many individual landmarks, historic districts, and two scenic landmarks. Some of these places are also recognized as National Historic Landmark (NHL) sites, which means they are important to the history of the entire United States.

Historic Neighborhoods

Historic districts are areas where many buildings together show an important part of history. The Landmarks Preservation Commission protects these neighborhoods. This helps keep their unique character and stories alive.
