Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993–1996)

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was the very first Sonic TV show. It started in 1993 and had 65 episodes. In this show, Sonic and Tails work together to stop the evil Doctor Robotnik. Each episode ended with a short message called "Sonic Says," where Sonic taught a lesson. This series is known for inspiring many funny internet memes.

Later, a Christmas special called Sonic Christmas Blast aired in 1996.

Sonic the Hedgehog (1993–1994)

This second Sonic cartoon is often called Sonic SatAM. It aired from 1993 to 1994 and had two seasons. This version of Sonic's world is a bit darker. Robotnik has taken over the planet Mobius, and Sonic leads a group called the Freedom Fighters to try and get it back.

The show was very popular and became a cult classic. It even inspired a video game called Sonic Spinball and a comic book series.

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie (1996)

This movie, also known as Sonic the Hedgehog, was an original video animation (OVA) from Japan. Sonic and Tails go to Eggmanland to stop a machine that could destroy their world. During their adventure, Sonic's DNA is copied to create a robot clone called Hyper Metal Sonic.

In Japan, it was released as two episodes. In North America, they were combined into one movie in 1999.

Sonic Underground (1999)

Sonic Underground was the third Sonic cartoon from DiC. It aired in 1999 and had 40 episodes. In this story, Sonic has two siblings, Sonia and Manic. Their mother, Queen Aleena, separated them when Robotnik took over. Years later, they reunite to form a rebellion and take back their planet. Each episode also included a musical song!

Sonic X (2003–2005)

Sonic X is a Japanese anime series. In this show, Sonic and his friends accidentally get sent to a parallel world where humans live. They meet a 12-year-old boy named Christopher Thorndyke, who helps them. Together, they fight Eggman and try to find the seven Chaos Emeralds to go back home.

The show was very popular outside of Japan, leading to a third season where Sonic, his friends, Chris, and a new character named Cosmo travel through space to stop an alien race called the Metarex.

Sonic Boom (2014–2017)

Sonic Boom is a CGI animated series made in America and France. It takes place on an island called Bygone Island. Sonic and his friends are always trying to stop Dr. Eggman's funny plans. The show ran for two seasons from 2014 to 2017.

This TV show was part of a bigger Sonic Boom project, which also included video games, comic books, and toys. The series was well-liked by fans.

Let's Meet Sonic (2019)

This was a special crossover episode of the Cartoon Network show OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes. Sonic and Tails appeared in this episode, which aired on August 4, 2019.

Sonic Prime (2022–2024)

Sonic Prime is an animated series made by Sega and Netflix. In this show, Sonic accidentally creates a multiverse (many different versions of his world). He has to travel through these different worlds, learning about himself and trying to fix things. The show was released on Netflix in three parts, from December 2022 to January 2024. Fans generally liked it.

Knuckles (2024)

This is a TV series focused on Knuckles the Echidna, set in the same world as the live-action Sonic movies. It was released on Paramount+ in 2024. The story takes place after the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie and before Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In the series, Knuckles trains a human named Wade Whipple to become a warrior like him.

Idris Elba voices Knuckles, and Adam Pally and Tika Sumpter play Wade and Maddie Wachowski again.

Sonic's Movies

There have been attempts to make Sonic movies since the 1990s. Early ideas included Sonic coming to the real world or a movie based on the Sonic SatAM TV show.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

The first live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie came out on February 14, 2020. It's an action-adventure comedy directed by Jeff Fowler. In the film, Sonic has to leave his home world and ends up on Earth. He teams up with a human named Tom Wachowski to stop Dr. Robotnik.

The movie's release was delayed because fans didn't like Sonic's original design in the first trailer. But after his design was changed, the movie was a big success! It was one of the highest-grossing films of 2020.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

This movie is the sequel to the 2020 film. It was released on April 8, 2022. Ben Schwartz voices Sonic, and Jim Carrey returns as Dr. Robotnik. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are back as Tom and Maddie. Idris Elba joins the cast as the voice of Knuckles!

The story is inspired by the video games Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic teams up with Tails to stop Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles from finding a powerful emerald. This movie was also a huge success at the box office.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)

A third Sonic movie was confirmed and is set to be released on December 20, 2024. Ben Schwartz will voice Sonic again. This film will be inspired by the video games Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog. Filming for the movie wrapped up in March 2024.

Sonic's Web Series

Sonic has also starred in several short animated web series!

Sonic: Night of the Werehog (2008)

This was the first 3D animated short web series, released in 2008. It was made to promote the game Sonic Unleashed. In the short, Sonic and Chip enter a haunted house and meet some funny ghosts.

Sonic Mania Adventures (2018)

This was the first 2D animated web series, released in five parts in 2018. It was a tie-in to the game Sonic Mania Plus. The series shows Classic Sonic returning to his world and finding Eggman trying to collect Chaos Emeralds again. Fans loved the animation and story. A special Christmas episode was released later that year.

Team Sonic Racing Overdrive (2019)

This 2D animated mini-series was released in 2019 to promote the game Team Sonic Racing. It shows Sonic, Shadow, and Amy's teams racing on Planet Wisp while Eggman tries to cause trouble.

Chao in Space (2019)

This 2D animated short was released in 2019. It's about a cute Chao who dreams of being in a space battle! While the Chao sleeps, Sonic tries to keep it safe, and Dr. Eggman tries to steal Christmas presents. This short was based on a funny joke from the Sonic Adventure games.

Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps (2021)

This 2D animated mini-series came out in 2021 to tie in with the game Sonic Colors: Ultimate. It follows Sonic and Tails as they try to save the Wisps from Metal Sonic, Orbot, and Cubot.

Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence (2022)

This 2D animated short was released in 2022, just before the game Sonic Frontiers. It tells the story of how Knuckles ended up on the Starfall Islands.

Sonic & Friends (2023)

This is a 3D animated series released on Sega's Japanese TikTok account. It features cute, small (chibi) versions of Sonic characters.

Sonic Superstars: Trio of Trouble (2023)

This 2D animated short was released in 2023 to promote the game Sonic Superstars. It shows Doctor Eggman, Fang the Hunter, and Trip searching a ruin for a villainous plan.
