The Sonic the Hedgehog series is a super popular collection of video games starring a speedy blue hedgehog. Sega publishes these games, and many different companies, including Sonic Team, help make them. The very first Sonic game came out in 1991 for the Mega Drive console.
At first, most Sonic games were platform games, where you run and jump through levels. They were mainly for Sega consoles like the Genesis and Sega Dreamcast. Over time, some of these classic games were updated for newer game systems. The Sonic series has sold over 89 million copies worldwide!
While platform games are the most famous, the series also includes other types of games. You can find Sonic racing games, fighting games, action-adventure games, role-playing video games, and even sports video games. All these games feature Sonic, a super-fast blue hedgehog. He's joined by a fun cast of characters like Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Shadow the Hedgehog, and the cute Chao creatures.
