Atlanta's Tall Building History
The first tall building in Atlanta was the Equitable Building, built in 1892. Atlanta had a big building boom from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. Many of the city's tallest buildings, including the top four, were built during this time.
Another period of building tall structures started in the early 2000s. Since then, 17 buildings over 400 feet (122 m) have been completed. This includes 3344 Peachtree, which is the tallest building in the Buckhead area. It was finished in 2008.
In March 2008, a tornado caused some damage to several downtown buildings. Glass was scattered from hundreds of feet up. Workers spent days cleaning the buildings and removing loose glass. Luckily, no major damage was done to the buildings' main structures. All the windows were replaced by late 2010.
