List of the prehistoric life of Louisiana facts for kids
This article lists the amazing prehistoric creatures and plants whose fossils have been found in Louisiana. These fossils tell us about life from millions of years ago!
Ancient Times: Precambrian and Paleozoic Eras
Scientists haven't found many fossils from the very oldest times, like the Precambrian and Paleozoic eras, in Louisiana. This means we don't know much about life here during those periods.
Dinosaur Times: The Mesozoic Era
The Mesozoic Era was the time of dinosaurs, from about 252 to 66 million years ago. In Louisiana, we've found fossils from this era, especially from the later part called the Late Cretaceous period.
Sharks and Other Sea Creatures
During the Mesozoic Era, parts of Louisiana were covered by a warm, shallow sea. This means many of the fossils found are from ocean animals.
- Squalicorax was a type of shark that lived during the Late Cretaceous.
- One species, †Squalicorax pristodontus, had teeth that looked like modern shark teeth.
- Other ancient sea creatures found include:
- †Dufrenoyia (and its species †Dufrenoyia dufrenoyi and †Dufrenoyia texana)
- †Hypacanthoplites
- †Parahoplites (possibly found)
- †Pseudosaynella
- †Rhytidhoplites (including †Rhytidhoplites robertsi)
Recent Ancient Life: The Cenozoic Era
The Cenozoic Era started about 66 million years ago, right after the dinosaurs disappeared. It continues up to about 10,000 years ago. This era is sometimes called the "Age of Mammals." Louisiana has many fossils from this time!
