The state of Michigan, and its location in the United States

This article is about the amazing animals in Michigan that need our help! It lists nearly 400 different kinds of animals. These animals are either endangered, threatened, or of special concern.

  • Endangered means there are very few of them left. They are in danger of disappearing forever.
  • Threatened means their numbers are getting low. If we don't help, they could become endangered.
  • Special concern means their populations are low or decreasing. They need extra attention to make sure they don't become threatened or endangered.

Michigan protects these animals with its own special law. It's called the Endangered Species Act of the State of Michigan. The list of protected animals was last updated in 2009. At that time, 69 new species were added. These included many types of freshwater mussels and snails. Also, 13 species were removed because their numbers improved.

Sometimes, animals are also protected by a national law. This is the federal Endangered Species Act from 1973. It helps protect over 1,250 different plants and animals across the whole United States. An animal can be on Michigan's list, the federal list, or both!

A group called the Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI) does a lot of work. They survey and research these special animals. They started in 1980 to help protect Michigan's natural places.
