Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Superman, the famous superhero, has starred in many video games over the years. The very first game featuring him came out in 1979, after the popular Superman movie.

Sadly, many Superman games haven't been very good. A famous example is the 1999 Nintendo 64 game, often called Superman 64. Many people think it's one of the worst video games ever made! But there are still many interesting games where you can play as the Man of Steel.

Games Starring Superman

1979 – Atari 2600		 Notes:
  • In this game, you play as Superman. Your mission is to fix a bridge destroyed by Lex Luthor, catch Luthor and his helpers, and then quickly change back into Clark Kent to return to the Daily Planet newspaper.
  • Kryptonite makes Superman lose his powers. To get them back, he has to find and kiss Lois Lane.
  • This was one of the first console games to let you pause the action!

1985 – Commodore 64, Atari 8-bit family		 Notes:
  • This game first came out for the Commodore 64. It was later released on other systems too.
  • You could even play as Superman's enemy, Darkseid!

  • The Japanese version of this game for the Famicom included the famous Superman theme music by John Williams.

  • This action game by Taito let a second player join in as a red-suited Superman.
  • It also featured the classic Superman theme music from the movies.

  • This game mixed different types of action, including 3D flying, top-down views, and side-scrolling parts.
  • Both Lex Luthor and Darkseid appeared as villains.

  • This was a side-scrolling action game. You guided Superman through levels to defeat villains, ending with the evil supervillain Brainiac. In Europe, it was called Superman: The Man of Steel.

  • This 2D action game was released only in Europe. It was based on the earlier Superman game for the Genesis.

  • This was a beat 'em up game. It was based on the famous comic book story "The Death of Superman".

1999 – Nintendo 64		 Notes:
  • Also known as Superman 64, this 3D action game had you control Superman. He had to save his friends from a fake version of Metropolis.
  • This game is famous for being one of the worst games ever made. People complained about bad controls and strange glitches.

2002 – PlayStation 2, GameCube		 Notes:
  • This game was based on Superman: The Animated Series. It used a special art style to look like a cartoon. The original voice actors from the show also returned for the game.

  • This game was loosely based on the Superman Returns movie. Many actors from the movie lent their voices and likenesses. Superman fought villains like Metallo, who wasn't in the movie.
  • The Game Boy Advance version was different. It mixed puzzle challenges with short flying action parts.

  • The Nintendo DS version was a prequel to the main story.

  • This game brought together characters from the Mortal Kombat series and the DC Universe, including Superman.

  • This fighting game was made by the creators of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Superman was a playable character.
  • In the story, an alternate version of Superman becomes a bad guy after the Joker tricks him into doing terrible things.
Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

2014 – Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo 3DS		 Notes:
  • This was the next Lego Batman game. Superman's voice actor returned.
  • Superman's look in the game was based on his New 52 comic book appearance.
  • You could also unlock other Superman costumes, like his Solar Suit.

  • This was a free online battle game based on the Infinite Crisis comic book. Superman was a playable character.
Injustice 2

  • This was the sequel to Injustice: Gods Among Us. Superman was a playable character.
  • In his ending, Superman plans to create a "Legion of Superheroes" to bring peace to the universe.

October 16, 2018 – PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows		 Notes:
  • This game was a sequel to Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. Superman's voice actor returned again.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

February 2, 2024 – PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Microsoft Windows		 Notes:
  • In this game, the Suicide Squad tries to defeat Brainiac. Brainiac has taken over Earth and brainwashed the Justice League.
MultiVersus

Early 2024 – Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S		 Notes:
  • This is a fighting game with characters from many different universes. Superman is one of the characters you can play.
