About Barking and Dagenham
Barking and Dagenham is one of the 32 London boroughs that make up Greater London. It is found in the eastern part of the city. The borough covers an area of about 36 square kilometers (14 square miles).
How it Was Formed
The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham was created in 1965. This happened when two older areas, the Municipal Borough of Barking and the Municipal Borough of Dagenham, joined together. This change was part of a big reorganization of local government in London.
People and Diversity
Barking and Dagenham is home to many different people. The area is known for its diverse community. This mix of cultures makes the borough a vibrant and interesting place to live.
Local Government
The borough is run by a local council. This council makes decisions about local services like schools, parks, and libraries. The council is led by a "Leader and Cabinet" system. This means a group of elected councillors makes important decisions for the borough.
