The Royal Borough of Greenwich is a special part of London located in the south-east of the city. It's called a "Royal Borough" because of its important history with the Royal Family. The area gets its name from the historic town of Greenwich.

This borough was created in 1965. It combined the old areas of Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich and part of Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich. The local government, called Greenwich London Borough Council, has its main offices in Woolwich.

Greenwich is famous worldwide! It's where the Prime Meridian is located. This imaginary line helps us measure longitude around the Earth. All world times are based on GMT, which started right here at the Greenwich Observatory. In 2012, a travel guide called Frommer's even named Greenwich one of the top ten places to visit globally. It was the only place in the UK on that list!

Greenwich and the Olympics

Greenwich played a big role in the 2012 London Olympics. It was one of six host boroughs for the games. Several exciting events took place here.

  • Shooting competitions were held at the Royal Artillery Barracks.
  • Horse riding events (equestrianism) happened in Greenwich Park.
  • Gymnastics and basketball games took place at The O2, which used to be called the Millennium Dome.

The borough is also home to a professional football team, Charlton Athletic.

Why is Greenwich a Royal Borough?

Greenwich became a "Royal Borough" on February 3, 2012. This was to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II, marking 60 years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

This special title was given for a few reasons:

  • Its long and important connections to the Royal Family.
  • Its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it's recognized globally for its unique cultural and historical importance. The Prime Meridian is a key part of this heritage.

Places to Visit in Greenwich

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has many interesting places. Here are some of the main areas:

  • Greenwich: The historic town known for its maritime history and the Prime Meridian.
  • Woolwich: A major urban center in the borough, where the council offices are located.
  • Millenium Dome: Now known as The O2, a large entertainment arena.
